>>> Style: Stylistically, this film is directly inspired by the 1969 surrealist film "The Color of Pomegranates" directed by Sergei Parajanov. That is why there are pomegranates by Gaga's feet in the opening sequence at 0:24. This is again confirmed in a more literal way during the ending sequence at 4:08 when a poster for the film quickly flashes on-screen.

>>> Familiarity: For those of you saying that this short reminds you of the 2000 movie "The Cell" starring Jennifer Lopez, you are very perceptive because it's the same director: Tarsem. He is known for his use of massive desert landscapes, heavy symbolism, and stunning imagery.
For those of you saying this reminds you of a Madonna video, you too are very preceptive because her 1995 music video "Bedtime Story" draws imagery directly out of "The Color of Pomegranates" as well as other surrealist films and paintings.

>>> Symbolism:
- At 0:47, the character repeatedly smashing his head against the pillow parallels the driver at 4:05 smashing his head against the airbag.
- At 0:54, the woman with the opening verse is an onlooker at 4:18 in a similar pose.
- The woman rocking a mummy at 1:11 is the woman rocking her loved one at 4:23, who has apparently passed away.
- At 1:20, the servant and the priestess (who are actually the paramedic and the doctor) float in with an umbrella, meaning they've arrived at the scene of the accident and can be seen at 1:37 checking the mummy's pulse and at 1:39 placing a metallic robe over the man on the pillow, which you later realize is a space blanket over the driver at 4:05.
- The seashell placed over the aristocrat's face at 1:55, is actually a respirator placed over a victim at 4:25
- The most powerful moment in my opinion is at 2:00, when Gaga is floating away with a stylized halo around her head while holding a white rose. This is a subtle suggestion that she is dying. The servant aggressively yanking her by the rope back to the ground is essentially a representation of the paramedic resuscitating her and saving her life.
- The priestess reflecting a mirror in her face at 2:11 is the doctor shining a light into her pupils at 4:20 checking for consciousness.
- At 2:27, the servant clasping Gaga's ankle represents the moment the tourniquet is placed on her leg.
- At 2:45, there is a mural depicting the accident.
- The plank behind Gaga, the yellow ribbon, and the mystical box seen in at 3:09 are the stretcher, caution tape, and defibrillator at the accident scene. The box contains knives to represent the pain of the electric shock when she awakens and we realize the entire sequence was a lucid dream inspired by her immediate surroundings.

0:57 – Two men in orange represent the fire fighters who are at the scene of the accident
0:57 - On the hat of the two "firemen", you will see the roman numerals "911"
1:07 – “Mummy” represents the person at the accident scene who has already died.
1:07 – Woman represents a relative of the deceased
1:09 - Three people in the background are viewers of the accident who are watching and posting to social media
1:10 - She is putting pills in her mouth (painkillers as she stated in the accident scene)
1:13 - Imagery of her swallowing the pills "down the hatch they go!"
1:17 – The paramedic and nurse arrive to the scene. The spinning umbrella represents the helicopter (Med Flight)
1:19 – The stick with the square represents the cell phone to record what is happening
1:20 – The paramedic and nurse begin to land the helicopter
1:33 – The paramedic and nurse begin checking the victims
1:37 – The pulse is checked and the person has already passed
1:39 – A foil blanket is thrown over the other victim
1:52 – The paramedic is getting ready to place a respirator/oxygen on another victim
1:58 – The flashing mirror represents the flashlight the nurse is using to check the pupils and eye reflexes
2:01 – She is getting ready to die and begins to ascend into Heaven.
2:08 – The paramedic has “roped her”, signifying he is not going to let her die.
2:11 – The flashlight is still being used to test her response.
2:15 – Her life is saved as she is pulled back to the ground.
2:16 - A brief moment flashes, showing Gaga in "real life". This is due to her being resuscitated for a split second.
2:18 – Red outfit similar to the lungs as she begins to breathe again.
2:23 – The paramedic and nurse surround her again as they know she isn’t dead.
2:27 – Her leg is being braced/fixed as this is her injury at the accident.
2:30 – He opens his mouth as he is getting ready to perform CPR.
2:33 – She doesn’t seem to respond and walks away.
2:34 – The rose petals are symbolic of the “sparks” that are coming from the theater sign at the end.
2:35 – The person in the blue outfit represents the police officer who is directing traffic.
2:38 – Traffic is getting directed as more people arrive on the scene. Blue ribbons are the fire hydrant that has busted.
2:44 – The snake represents the Star of Life logo on emergency responder uniforms.
2:45 – The image of the accident is in the back, showing hints of what is happening/has happened. The paramedic is still working on her ankle.
2:51 – CPR is still being applied, pounding her chest. This is why his hand is over her chest and her hand is “beating” to the music (representing a heart beat). She shakes her head "no" as CPR has been a failed attempt.
3:01 – The stretcher arrives to the scene. They position her in front of it.
3:03 – The box represents the cardiac defibrillator and the daggers are the electrodes to provide the shock.

Also, the video draws inspiration from the Armenian masterpiece The Color of Pomegranates and I couldn't help but notice that the aesthetic was akin to Tarsem's The Fall.

I know that she's just acting, but when she says "I don't wanna die" at the end, it hits me real hard. She has to go through these emotions everyday, battling for her life with her own mind. My heart goes out to her, and knowing that she has fibromyalgia yet she still makes videos like this for us... I appreciate her more and more. Love you Gaga, you're the best thing that's ever happened to us.

I do want to explain something important! The lyrics “pop a 911” is referring to her pills, her antipsychotic pills she had to take when she had a psychotic breakdown. So if you piece together the whole bike accident at the end + Gaga asking “Did anybody die?” and her also saying “I didn’t take my pills” to the paramedics, it means that she’s actually the one who caused the accident (she rode her bike straight onto traffic). Hence the lyrics “my biggest enemy is me”, which is why it’s followed up with “pop a 911” bc that’s meant to represent her pills that stop her from harming herself/have suicidal thoughts.

She didn’t take her pills, which had her thinking about suicidal thoughts and caused her to try and take her own life. All the scenes we see before she comes back to reality is all referring to the images she last saw (before passing out). In the scene where she’s in the green dress, that’s her about to die and “pass on” because she’s literally ascending but the guy paramedic captures her by a rope and brings her back (to life), plus the lady paramedic is the one flashing the mirror at her which represents her trying to shine a light onto Gaga’s eyes back in reality. The “LG = life is good” is pretty much irony. But when that flashes on screen, you can also hear Gaga saying “I don’t want to die” which is her realization that she wants to live, even though her mind was telling her earlier to kill herself, it’s not what she actually wants. Her coming back to the reality made her realize that and also kind of sober up a bit in that moment.

I hope that made sense! There’s a lot of details that is on this video, a lot of references as well and hidden meanings but I believe these are the most important ones. This video seems very personal once you understand what it means. by dracaryse

Observar este video que se me hizo muy interesante me hizo recordar una entrevista que Lady Gaga tuvo con Martha Debayle donde, Lady Gaga comentaba que hubo una época de su carrera en la que se sentía muy enojada con este personaje que había creado, que deseaba volver a ser Stefani Joanne, y renegaba de su carrera. Lo cual al observar el video me hace interpretar que cuando le llego el éxito y la fama para ella fue como un choque automovilístico, que no esperaba, mismo que la llevo a un sueño maravilloso, hermoso y a la ves extraño que no entendía. Así mismo se observa que tiene un tobillo atado que le impide flotar, lo que me hace interpretar que talvez ella sentía que no podía volar y flotar libremente en este sueño, estaba atada le impedía avanzar y no poder disfrutar de su sueño, lo que hizo que se convirtiera en una pesadilla de la que no podía despertar hasta que por medio de una energía como electrochoques la hizo regresar a la realidad y a la conciencia de quien era y donde estaba, y se dio cuenta que todo ese sueño había sido creado por ella por todo lo que había visto y escuchado durante su camino en la vida antes de este "choque" como ella lo expresa en el video. Creo que eso es lo que ella quiso comunicar en este video, como su voz era robótica sin los matices de una voz de un ente vivo, Pero en fin eso interpreto de lo que nos quiso decir, y por lo que veo al parecer la paso mal, lo bueno que despertó. aclaro es mi interpretación del video.
