Playtime Comments : [Insider] Ballet Shoes Made For Brown-Skinned Ballerinas

Am******:
I love 2:57, “Catering to my darkness”. Just a classic line to me that wasn’t meant to sound that way but I thought it was awesome. I’m dark skinned too and it was only some years ago that I learned that the pink colour was to create the illusion of an extended leg down to the toe. It totally makes sense and it’s beyond high time that brown and ‘caramel’ and other skin tones were taken into account for ballet shoes - pointe and beginner... I think the shoes are beautiful. The soft pink to the rich browns; they reflect our diversity and are beautiful.

4:14 The beautiful chocolate color of the shoes enhances her beautiful form

Li************:
1:31 watch this part if you don’t know why it has to KINDA match skin tone

sw********:

2:50 her muscle definition is amazing

No********:

Great video, but didn’t appreciate at 0:50 when the voiceover said that Misty Copeland was the first black principal dancer in any major company. That is not true, and majorly disrespectful to black principal dancers who have came before Misty, dancing during times that were much harder to succeed in than right now. Lauren Anderson, a black woman, of the Houston Ballet became principal in 1990, and Houston is definitely a major company. Misty was the first African American female principal in ABT’s history. Fact check your videos before publishing, Insider.

K*:

There are so many consumer products like bras, stockings, and bandaids that are white or tan by default, so POC don't realize its supposed to match your skin tone until someone goes and creates a product like this that does

Ch*****:

The comment section : "i didn't know the shoes were supposed to match the skin tone"

Me : they bake the shoes in the proces??

Sh********:

OUCH my feet cramp and hurt looking at those feet position.

Ha***************:

This is great, these shoes are so pretty, they match a dark skinned ballerina so much better!

Mi*******:

For those who prefer to comment without watching the video the purpose of the skin toned shoes is to extend the line of the leg when tights are not worn. Explanation starts at the 1:29 mark. You’re welcome.

Ka**********:
It still amazes me that their shoes are all handmade!

La*******:

As a black ballerina this makes me so proud

Sp************:
EARLLYYYY I’m a dancer and I’m dark, I’ll definitely look into this!

El********:
I’m a ballerina and I always wondered why they don’t have dark skinned ballet shoes I’m glad that they finally did

de**********:
Those are beautiful! I'm not black, but I love black skin tones. Such beautiful coppers and deep browns. Absolutely beautiful. About time...

De**********:
I didn’t know ballet shoes were supposed to be skin colored. When I was younger I just wanted pink ones.
Edit: I just like pink stuff. That’s all. And I’m happy the industry is including shoes for darker skin tones. It really does help extend the leg line. I am not a dancer so I won’t ever get to wear them unless I just buy them for some odd reason. I think people thought this made me mad, no it did not. Just had to clear that up.

Dr***********************:
I read this as “Ballet shoes made FROM brown skinned ballerinas” I got scared for a second

ch*********:
I’m a brown skinned ballerina! :D that’s why I started my channel. I love ballet, and I haven’t see many brown ballerinas.

An**************:

Lol I’m not even a dancer and I was able to tell how horrible those feet were in that animation

Sa*********:
Love this! But we can we talk about those horrible flexed toes on the cartoon that was supposed to demonstrate a beautiful line?! Lol

bi********:

1:37 "to the tip of her toe" ThAt isN'T pOIntEd! As a dancer this infuriates me a lot.
But otherwise I loved the video.

Pk**:
what would be pretty is skin toned ballerina shoes from every human skin tone laid out in a circle like a gradient :D

n:

Wow! I like the colour! Its pretty! Hell yea queen keep going!

Al***********:
Ive been dancing for years and im so happy they are expanding products

Su********:
The bronze are prettier than the pink honestly. The shine is more obvious and they look like metal.

Ka****:
This is so much more appealing for the eye I wonder why they didn’t introduce them long ago

Sc******:

Today's fact: The fitness levels of a ballerina are very high. A single performance is the equivalent of running up to 30 km.

iz***************:

how she said “period” had me dead

co**********:

They’re so pretty too. That bronze is to die for

Ol***********:
I always thought ballet shoes were pink and white to look really pretty and graceful. I didn’t know it was to match skin colour. The brown shoes look well pretty on dark skinned people

Ra**************:
Look at their toned muscles, amazing

Lo***********:

I danced ballet from the age 2 til i was 16/17. I was born with an inturned hip joint and was told I would never do pointe work. I didn't get up on pointe until much later than my other friends in my class but eventually, I got there. At the time it never crossed my mind how privileged I was to be able to buy my very treasured first (and only) pair of pointe shoes in the correct colour for my skin but now as an adult, I can see it. I love that freed (same company my shoes came from) are making pointe shoes for women of all colours because ballet only becomes more beautiful with diversity and inclusivity.

Jo***********:

Come on people are you paying attention to the video? If you watched the video it answered the questions. It's not the ballerinas it's the company's that are changing. The ballerinas and the shoe company's had to change to comply. Times have changed and evolved. This is not the I remember when days. Those days are gone. This is the present and the future. And is it really that bad for the shoes to match the skin tone. It really does look better and more in line. I'm so tired of people being negative and complaining bout EVERYTHING SINGLE THING

br********:
Both the dancers and the shoes are so gorgeous , even being a white dancer I see those shades of satin and I just wanna wear them. And I'm so happy that these advancements are being made because so much traditional dancewear leaves black dancers out for example: nude leotards and nude straps on costumes always stick out on darker skin tones and it makes the dresses look unflattering. Props to all the brands that make dancewear for all skin tones and to all the minority dancers fighting to make the world of ballet more diverse!
