traditional mukbang were korean live stream eating shows, that was sort of like a wind down for the streamer's day where the viewers come in and talk to the streamer in a natural way maybe even eating dinner themselves. muk is from the korean word for eating, bang is the word for room so it literally stands for "eating room" which is just what eating streams ended up being called, then some of them started doing big eating challenges or would normally eat large amounts of food and getting good viewership even from even just having korean locals in chat so the rest of the world was like "CHALLENEGE?!" "FIRE NOODLES?!" MUK BAENG, ASMR adopted it for the use of crunchy and weird foods, youtubers use it for the crazy 40000 kcal thumbnails and starting drama somehow. I think its pretty cool that you can literally do anything on the internet as long as you're cool and consistent someone will want to hang out with you through your videos or whatever, we can get a view into other's lives all over the world. Even though we are thousands of miles apart we can come together and share moments together.

They don't explain some of the culture.
Korean culture is to work to the bone.. so a lot of families don't even get to live together throughout the week because of different job locations. It's normal to have the "weekend dad" or "weekend mom".

So some of the mukbang is to literally be the companion to eat with.

Other mukbang is to watch the youtuber and feel the satisfaction of eating as much as you'd like without actually eating. This is also due to Korean culture of women wanting to be as thin as possible.
