I remember my dad said just keep hitting the starter till it started. This lasted for a while since we didnt have that kind of money even for a junk one. Now we have more junkers that are fully working and are fully street legal

An alternative to checking the battery, relays, neutral switch, ignition barrel, fuses or using a hammer is to put the voltmeter directly onto the starter connections. If you get 12V there when you crank it but the starter won't turn, the starter is bad.

My starter went on my ford transit a few years ago with symptoms just like what you said. A year later exact same symptoms, turns out it was my ignition switch.

Chris thank you for the video, very helpful. Had to pick up my oldest niece after her trip and the car would not start. This has happened before and it was embarrassing. Thank god my wife was with me. Had my wife try to start the car while I taped on the starter. After a couple of try’s the car started. Thank you again brother

Then today my brothers starter quit working in his 2001 Oldsmobile Alero. I had my starter go out early January of 2018... replaced it myself in an hour in my driveway... next day, 4 inches of snow.

Thought my starter was dead I fiddled with the plug on my clutch and it did the trick I wouldn't have ever thought of that thank you!

Thank you for this video. My car wouldn't start so thought it was the starter motor. I didn't realise about the neutral safety switch and never thought that the problem could be that the gear lever wasn't in park properly. I moved the gear lever to neutral and tried starting it and it worked and now works fine. My car had sat in my garage for three days while I was figuring out how I could pay for the repairs I would need. Such a simple thing that I never thought to check. I think I need to learn more about cars lol

Your videos are awesome Chris!! I’ve started working and repairing all my car needs with help and motivation from your videos. I have an engine starter story for ya. My starter failed on me at a gas station just the other night. She continued to engage and make the clicking noise even after my key was out of the ignition. Did this for several minutes until it started to smoke on me. After removing the starter, the armature / gear inside was free moving if you were to turn t upside down. Got her replaced and she started right up. No one could say why it did this. I was curious as to if you had any answers why. Thanks!!!
