Solvents in WD40 kills belts. Talcum powder is usually equally effective & way less pernicious.

ch**********:

Love you! You are so helpful. You r like my astroplane/internet mechanic.

Hell yeah!

De********:
Why not buy belt spray? They sell it at autozone.

Ke*********:
WD-40, I put that shit on everything (black woman voice)

Az*********:
Does WD40 not rot rubber, same with any petroleum based product on rubber, this could also make the belt slip. There is a product on the market, or there used to be some 15 years ago which stops belt squeal  and slip, we used to use it on our ageing Saab 900 during the winter months cant for the life of me remember the name of it, but probably not available outside of Europe anyway. But it worked a treat and it conditioned the rubber as well.

Ti***************:

No wd40 that can make it slip this is an old video so don't follow it's saying it's not safe

Re*************:
WD-40 DOES NOT WORK, THIS WILL BE A TEMP FIX WHICH WILL CAUSE MORE DAMAGE TO YOUR BELT. USE SILICON SPRAY, THIS REMOVES ALL SQUEAKS

Je*********:

hey man i was wandering if you could help me figure out some squeaky belt on my car. every time i start my car the belt starts making some noise and after like 5 to 10 seconds it stops. do you think that its my belt or one of the pulleys. thanks

Jo****:
When you are looking for a way to fix something and see an old Chris fix video and half way through it you realize it's the video you first saw from his page.

Na*****:

Great! Thx to your vid My srt8 doesn't sound like a hamster is powering it

on*********:
WD-40 is not for rubber parts. There are rubber treatment fluids for that.
The mineral oil will make it dry and brittle.

ad*************:

best way to stop a squeaky belt is to change it ....

ra****:

Try pressing candle wax to the rotating belt. Adds grip.

Tr**********:

My friend sprayed wd40 on his belt to stop a squeak, the belt broke the next day. Wd40 eats away rubber.

Ja******:

Wow how awesome, using lubricant on something that requires friction to work properly you're da man!

zx*******:
Its odd as it sort of sounds like a small bearing having a squeek :-)

The number one sound i hear is the alternator belt having a screeeeeeem after someone has just started there car, so so common.

I know its eather a worn or loose belt, and the semi discharged battery giving the alternator a hard day lol.

I enjoy your vids chris :-))

Su*******************:

This made my belt louder, what do I do now

Ma*******:
Listen to the video very carefully!  He says "diagnose" and "find", not "perm-fix"!  Oils, greases, etc, will destroy a belt.  If its already bad, you need a new belt or find the misaligned pulleys..  Just adding my 2c since I have heard people praising this method as a perm-fix.

St*************:
I found Black Magic tire shine works real well. Just a little shot of it will quiet down a squeaky belt for a long time.

Tr******:

Thank you for all the different advice and I'll try all of them.

My Dad once used belt dressing on his 2003 Dodge Ram. It only made it worse. It sounded awful. He was using a rag and some lacquer thinner to clean it off while running it. I do not recommend doing that because one slip and there goes your fingers!! I once used belt dressing on my car (one I no longer have) and it did not make any horrible noises. The best thing to do is if you can't live with horrible noises, replace the belt. Then it won't drive you insane.

If you want to drive other people insane, the belt dressing is worth the chance.

I has squeeky voice. Sprayed wd40 in my throat. Is excellent now. Thank you (ps tung keeps slipping down throat) oo er

WD-40 that shit works for everything praise WD-40

Da*********:

It been 2 days belt squeak has gone. I wish it would stay like this. Thanks man this worked for me.

Jo********:

Thanks for the tips it helped out. I think I may have a bearing issue, the belt looked good and tight, didn't move from side to side. there is a grinding type of sound but not all the time. definitely will have it checked out, but the squeeky sound is gone. thanks again.

JM*:
Instilled confidence, helped big time, Thanks

Ma*********:

Thank you, this video was supremely helpful.

Ti*******:
I been spraying with belt conditioner. It lasts until morning dew or rain gets on it. Gotta get me one of them gator back belts you recommended

강그*:

wd40 make harden belt? (sorry, i can't apeak English well)

Co********:
I use a chalk on my belt and it stops the squeak for good.

Uw**********:

High Chris, you know what you are doing. Thanks for your exellent videos. Greatings from Germany.

to********:
Isn't this a bad idea? The WD-40 will make the belt slip under pressure?

TM*****:

(WD-40) Greece has to be the perfect antirust!!!

cr*****************:
WD-40 is bad on rubber! you don't want to mess with one of the most critical components in your car just to stop a noise!

Wh***********:
I sprayed too much WD-40 on my squeaky belt once and my pants fell down :)

Mi***********:
Dont use wd40 if you must use something.. Use a single drop of cooking oil or a bar of soap.

An********:
Sounds like your not stopping the squeal. Just quieting the squeal. Its squealing because its slipping.Using wd 40 would in my opinion just make it slip more.Although it seems to eliminate sound. Its still slipping.Back in the day when I had a squealy belt and dint want to go to store and buy that sticky pray that was sticky enough to eliminate the slipping but not a glue.I would grab a can of g/f Aquanet hair spray and spray pully. Hair spray works pretty go.Anything sticky would work. Some light 3m adhesive or like I said they sell stuff for this problem.I mean a can of Prestone belt dressing costs $2 or something. Atleast that products attacks problem.Belt slipping..WD 40 just quiets it.Its still slipping If not more now that is slippery from the WD40.I like your channel but on this I got to give you a fail. Can of wd40 is more expensive than belt dresss.$2.27 at Walmarts

Mi*******:

Mine doesn't last long at all with WD-40. Bar soap works a bit longer. I tried some bike chain lube thinking it might not sling off as easy but I don't think bike chain speed compares to serpentine belt speed! Strange thing on my 2003 focus is that there a long sharp curve to the left on my commute and if I take it fast, like 65 when the yellow warning sign says 35, it will actually go quiet for the next 1/4 to 1/2 mile. Really strange. Noticed it yesterday and just again today. It's like whatever component or pulley is out of alignment somehow gets pushed into alignment by the side forces. Makes me think I can get it to stop if I can figure out which component is able to move around a bit. I also bought a gator belt just in case to try and put on this weekend.

Fu********:
Ive been chasing down what I and my professional mechanic friends naturally assumed was a slipping alternator/fan belt. Upon starting there was this horrible screeching sound and the volt meter would sag until the screeching stopped which might be 2 or up to 20 seconds.
After pursuing every possible solution including changing the alternator (and adding tiny teeth to its pulley with channellock pliers) the problem persisted...tho every remedy seemed to make the screech go away for awhile.
You know what it was? On this engine (3.2 litre Isuzu v6 used on rodeos and troopers mid 90s) the pulleys are press fit onto the harmonic balancer and can work loose. The screech was metal on metal. Pulley slipping on the balancer. Tightening the belt (by itself or when you replaced the alternator) increased side loading of the pulley which diminished the slippage for a short time and led you to believe you were on the right track fixing it.
My mechanic buddies had never seen this but apparantly the gurus at planetisuzu forums say its common.
