Summary Comments : [ChrisFix] Belt Tensioner Pulley, How to replace (EASY and CHEAP)

Fr****************:
Hi Chris,

I have a 2006 Honda CRV that is making noise like this...I've bought the Gatorback belt via Amazon Direct and saved money as follows;

1) $69.25 vs. $11.28 from Amazon...so that's a huge savings: $57.97!!! this is an 83% cost savings.....ridiculous. I also saved $150 dollars on self installation; and I am NOT a prof. mechanic...it took me 40 minutes with a 14mm, 10mm sockets, wrench, a long screw driver, and a short #2 screw driver to pull the "button" connectors (save them for reinstallment underneath the wheel well). Savings on this tiny job: $150 + ~$58 = $208

2) any difference in your experience from "your demo" vehicle to the 2006 Honda, with respect to spacers on the Honda tensioner bearing please?

We all need to save money on OEM parts...money is too hard to come by today to give ownership a 300-500% markup on parts. NOTE this everyone.

da********:

1. Chris, nice vid.
2. If pulley is expensive for your model, you can replace just the bearing.
3. The other pulleys are grooved. Be sure when putting belt back on that it is in the right grooves.

Ja***:
Customer service reps at Firestone want $169.00 for the belt tensioner pulley, is that correct?  I saw some online for $49.99.

I'm not overly mechanically inclined. I watched your video last night, bought parts this morning (serpentine belt and idler pulley), ultimately took me 23 minutes! Thumbs up and a subscription!  Good stuff man.

St**************:
Chris, Thought I would mention that it would have helped me had you mentioned that the pulley bolts are reverse threaded. Love your channel, you get right to the point and don't waist my time. you've helped me a lot over the last few years. Keep on truckin my friend.

Bo***********:

Great video. Makes a lot of sense and well explained. Seems simple enough. Thanks.

Hi chrisfix

I did change the tensioner and the drive belt. There is no chirping now.
But it started ticking sound on engine. Any ideas

an******:

Wow! You do an excellent job on instructional videos! I just watched this one and the other about the engine squeak and completely understand everything you said! With the right tools, I feel I can go fix the squeak myself, although not sure I could get the belt off by myself. I am probably two to 3 times your age, female and my hands hands have quite a bit of arthritis in them these days but I have done a lot of things under my own hood. Thanks a lot for making such a great easy to understand video that even a gramma like me can use!

Jo*********:

Would you mind doing a video on how to remove the actual tensioner?

ch******:

a shop by my house wants to charge 100$ for labor (1 hour) to change my belt tensioner for my benz, and 100$ for the part.

So i went to amazon bought the part for 50$ (belt tensioner specific to my car model) and saw your video, and 150$ saved.

Thanks a lot man subbed and liked

Om******:

Thanks for the video! I have a question: my pulley is bend, it doesnt squeek too much but i dont know if I have to change just the pulley or the tensioner?....because the belt gets off once in a while and now more often, it dont look like the belt is jumping but the pulley dont look straight either...

Ke******:
Great vid...would it be the same on a Nissan Murano? It be great if you do one

Ja*********:
Good vid man.

Ja**********:
Jesus loves you all very much!!!

Su*************:
So when u turn the tensioner with the long bracket on the bolt clockwise you loose the belt and not tighten the tensioner ????

Ha****:

Both my belt and tensioner were completely worn out. The belt even fell off, so my service light lit up and my engine started heating up right away. This video helped me replace them, and my car works again. Thank you!

gm***:
How about making a video on removal / installation of the belt tensioner assembly on the Ford Ranger 3.0. your video's are very informative.

ig******:

To**********:

On the Chevy 3.5 V6 is counterclockwise to take the tension off the serpentine belt Chris. You may want to add depending on your vehicle it may be clockwise or counterclockwise.

Da**********:
grt8 video, although you don't show how to remove the belt from the tensioner pulley itself, would be very helpful to know this.

Da**********:
I have a 93 Toyota pickup 6 cylinder, I noticed when it's cold and I have my defroster on and my headlights sometimes I will get a belt squeaking and it looks like my voltage meter on my Dash goes down but if I press on the gas the squeaking does go away and my voltage goes back to normal what could this be?

ja********:
Mine chirps/squeaks when cold. But when its warmed up it goes away. What could that be ?

fu*******:
Dude you're awesome!!
My car has been making that sound for about the past year and I finally fixed it!!

An**************:
How do you replace the tensioner pulley bolt that the pulley sits on? I somehow striped mine withthe tensioner screw. Help!

ab*****:
I had no chance to do my self my belt tore in pieces next my mechanic shop no squeaking noise or anything after checking one of my tensioner was moving side way so $500 dollar in to drain.

70*******:
You seem real comfortable under the hood. It's a hell of a video, thank you.

ro************:

Same problem with my car. I have the tools already, all I need is to find the parts.

As******:
Thank you for existing.

jo***********:
I got a new tensioner pully and belt but it squeals when I start driving not idle or going a fast speed. I need to buy that tool to tighten it more? Or could it be a bad tensioner pully? ( Brand new from oriels

Mi************:
Dorman Products makes an "Anti-Slip Shield" for the tensioner pulley it also fits on the idler pulley. The Dorman part number is 82570 available at most parts stores for about $6-$8 . The shield comes with a replacement bolt which is slightly longer than the originals used to compensate for the thickness of the shield. To install loosen the tension on the belt then, unbolt the pulley discard the OEM bolt. Next insert the new bolt through the shield, through the pulley then tighten. Once in place flex the tensioner then slide the belt in place. I use the shield on both pulleys and the problem of the belt slipping off is eliminated.

Da**********:

Chow, after watching your videos on this topic I was able to determine my tensioner pulley was trashed. I tried to purchase a new one from the dealer but they could only sell me the whole pulley assembly with a much smaller pulley attached. I took option B' and took the old pulley to Napa and they were able to cross check the part number with the last four digits of the VIN and match it up with a new pulley of the same dimensions. This saved me a lot of extra cost and time. The pulley measured 102mm in case anyone needs that info. Thanks again for a huge assist!

Hi ChrisFix, I’m a loyal viewer of your videos. Thank you for sharing all the useful tips! I have a question that bugged me for years. I took my car to a few mechanics and they couldn’t pinpoint the issue. You see, when my car (2012 Nissan Juke) moves off from cold, within the first 5 minutes of driving before the engine is warmed up, it gives out this chirping noise under the hood at exactly 1500rpm. If the rpm is below 1000rpm or over 2000rpm, the chirping noise goes away. After the engine has warmed up, the noise goes away. Is it a rocker arm or belt alignment/tension issue? Of late, the noise has gotten louder. I’m worried that this could lead to serious engine failure. Do you have any advise on this? Thank you very much for answering my question. God bless your kind soul.
