Thanx for doing them. It's helped me out so much!

Mr****************:
Great video you sound different in the old days lol

km*******:

it shines like a fresh turd

So******:

heatgun = manly blowdryer

Th********:

Hey ! I did this method while back on my SUV's faded plastic trims/claddings. It turned out great but the heat also loosened the glue between the plastic and metal body and the plastic is no more sticky to the metallic body.

fr********:
If this doesn't work then you need plastic cleaner, gray scratch pad adhision promoter and a black dye

Fa******:

First Chris showed me how to polish my wife's headlights. Now he's got me taking care of her trim. Now if I could figure out how to take care of her old worn out rear end. Thanks man. She can't stop smiling.

Th****:
I used the heat gun method and it makes the car look great for a few months, then worse after a half year. Better to restore with a longer solution.

Sh***********:
try the heating method then a quick shot of 2k body shop spray can clear. I wander if that would be a permanent fix.

mi************:

U sound so shy back in those old days

Fe*******:
Me at the beggining: "Hey guys, ChrisF... Wait what?"

Ge*************:
any update on how the plastic looks now?

tr*************:
Peanut butter works I heard

Ir********:
I would use this method+ back to black

ru**********:
I've used ReNu and it works much much better than Back to Black. back to black just made it greasy looking and didn't last very long. ReNu lasted well over 6 months.

Sz******:

Black cream shoe polish the best item.

do*********:

also works on people

What you did was a south Texas used truck salesman's trick. You hid the vehicle's condition without fixing it. That solved your problem of not liking the appearance, but what caused it is now progressing faster.

The streaked clouded appearance was caused by minerals and wax bonding to the surface and then being washed away unevenly, probably by slightly acidic rain. Fusing it into the surface actually makes the plastic degrade faster, just more evenly.

When you don't remove the surface contamination and deteriorated surface before heating, you create a glossy coating over a weakened plastic surface that has a lower concentration of plasticizers and UV inhibitors beneath it.. You will experience a honeymoon followed by an unnoticed deterioration of the material that you will ignore until you eventually notice the surface flaking away.

When a vehicle is a short term possession (3-5 years) rather than a piece of durable capital equipment (10+ years) then not investing the time to thoroughly prep the surface by cleaning and treating with UV inhibitors before glazing the surface might make sense. I've never been able to afford keeping a vehicle for less than 10 years. Keeping them good looking throughout my ownership helps keep me motivated to keep them in good mechanical condition.

My god this is an old video.... maybe a revamp. it would be good. I still do far it this lasts long enough. Kudos +ChirsFix

Di********:

Chris, I watched this the other day. I have tried all the "black" renewers and protectants including shoe dye on my plastic, but nothing worked. Anyway, I guess my wife was paying attention and asked that I try this on her trim. This works awesome! Thanks so much!

Ba****:
HAS ANYBODY tried this on a different colored trim like TAN on the Explorer Eddie Bauer edition ...and if so did the color return to it's natural color or morph into a different shade?

Jo******:
after using a heat gun on plastic you really should finish it up with wax or plastic threatment.

Ya***************:

If you come from Corona time like

th******************:
sup everyone

Ja**********:

How long did it last?

Re*********:

I used plasti dip so i won't have to deal with any more fading

Mr*******:

If you hold the heat gun in one place for a really long time it makes interesting shapes and drips that customize the plastic on your car.

Za****:
I did this to the plastic bumpers and trim on my 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo. When I purchased it the plastic was terrible looking, all faded and turning white. I hit it with a heat gun and was stunned at the results. Sadly though it only took a couple months before I could definitely notice it was fading again. I think I"m going to just get some bedliner spray and spray the plastics with it for a longer lasting look.

Br**********:
Man I wish I would have known this years ago when I had my Nissan Titan. The wiper cowl on the Titan is known to fade badly after only a year or so. I fixed mine by removing it and painting it with Rustoleum truck bed spray. It has a nice and fine textured finish. I liked it so much I also sprayed the door handles and mirrors. But the heat gun looks alot easier! I will picking one up from Harbor Freight to use on my Dakota soon.

Man chrisfix!!! You sound so much more confident and happy in your videos now!!! love you work, keep up the good work!!

Ni********:
So the question or the elephant in the room is what is the grey stuff on the plastic. why does the heat work.

The answer is oxidation, same issue as paint and windshields and what happens to plastic patio chairs.
The suns uv rays don't help. When plastic is new, its pours are smooth, even shinny. Same for a new paint job on a car. In the case of cars paint, we use soap to clean the dirt on the paints clear coat. This helps prevent dirt buildup causing damage but does not address the paints oxidation. This is because we really don't notice it as much on the glossy painted areas until the paints shine fades away. Most cars paint can be cleaned with a polish, and then waxed to protect the paint from damaging uv rays and the wax fills the pores of the paint to keep dirt from embedding itself and causing the shine to dull.

Plastic is affected by the sun's uv rays, soaps we use to clean the car, winter road salt and other harmful petroleum based protectants actually fill in the pores of the plastic. This causes much of the greying. To restore the plastic, much like a leather, or paint you have to clean off the contaminants and nourish the plastic with a plastic conditioner. After conditioning the plastic, you should use a good quality plastic protectant.

I think, repeating this conditioning, and protecting does accumulate and the finish will last longer. The best recommendation for keeping the exterior plastic looking new is cleaning and conditioning the plastic at least 4 times a year for your daily driver. Refer to Meguiar's products for a nice plastic cleaner and protectant.

yo*******:

Hey chris just wondering how long does that actually last.

Dr****:
So does this work forever or just temporarily?

jy****:
I used this method for a while but then just ended up trying out black plasti-dip, it looks almost identical, you can get it at Home Depot or if you live in Canada like me, Canadian tire. And if you don't like the look it just peels off and is very weather resistant I used plasti-dip to black out the front emblem of my 03 tundra a year and a half ago and it still looks brand new and it's made through car washes and harsh Canadian winters, just a second product I thought might make a difference to anyone reading this xD anyways love the vids Chris keep them going

Is*********:

I used to use this method but it only works for a certain number of times. Basically, it's all about chemistry and the trim goes grey because it's losing the oils. The heat gun helps draw the natural oils out and bring back the lovely dark shade, however, the trim will eventually run out of oils and this will no longer work. Trim dressing products can work for a temporary fix but for what they really are the price is silly. Best thing to use is Olive or Baby Oil, rub it in and let it soak into the trim and buff off. Should last a long time but I'd suggest further applications over time so that you fully replenish the trim's oils. A bonus being a bottle of Olive Oil is many, many times cheaper than the trim dressing stuff.
