Summary Comments : [Vox] Bad typography has ruined more than just the Oscars

Fo******:

For all those saying it's not typography, just going to leave this definition here from Wikipedia: "Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing (leading), letter-spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning)."

Edit - Wikipedia cited it from this source: Bringhurst, Robert. The Elements of Typographic Style, version 3.1. Canada: Hartley & Marks, 2005. p. 32.

2:15 they could’ve easily connected the arrow and the bubble so they touched. End of confusion.

Ja***********:
3:43: What is my name doing on that prescription bottle! You can tell the sausage-sucking Medic that Soldier doesn't need drugs; he's a man of action!

Br*****:

The alternate card design at 1:42 is still not okay I read the 1st runner up instead of the actual winner first so...yeah there’s that.

I think they should have put the winner first and in larger writing .

Si****:
the actual card design for Miss Universe at 1:40 was better than alternate design. The original design clearly have the winner at the other side of the card while the alternate design is just straight down the center. That's not the problem anyway. Harvey made a mistake because he read from top to bottom, so he read Colombia because it came first. What they should have done is put the Miss Universe winner in the center and below the 2nd runner-up. The 1st runner-up should be at the end or not on the card at all because their name was not to be read out.

People are lazy. We need graphic designers to save the world

IS********************:
Who designed that card? Must be an intern.

La****************:
Moral of the story:
Graphic designer still has one job.

Ph******:
I actually cannot fathom who thought it was a good idea to have arguably one of the most important pieces of information on that card ('best picture') so impossibly small and right at the bottom. After seeing that, I'm surprised there haven't been more mess-ups like this year.

TE*************:
Bad design always makes the user feel as if it was his fault a misuse, when in reality is the designers fault...

Ma******:

i love it. love the idea that if the system is faulty it DOES NOT mean that people are idiots for reading the wrong card without realising.
it's the system that let them do that stupid things when they are vulnerable/under pressure/doing mundane routine things that do not and should not require consious involvement, like taking pills, which we start doing automatically if it's the same pill for years

Kr******:

In Slovenia, medicines ussually comes in cardboard boxes in blister packets.

It's weird how the US doesn't adapt to new things, while we've done it for a long time. I mean, WHY NOT USE BLISTER PACKETS INSTEAD OF BOTTLES?
Target's pill bottles looks dope tbh, with coloured rings like the detachable teethbrush ones.

Te******:
Why do you even have your pills in bottles like that anyway?
Get on with the rest of the world and start using cardboard boxes that hold sheets of pills that are individually sealed. All the information is on the pack and on the sheet so you can never mistakenly take the wrong drug unless you really try. Every box is a different size and colour and the name of the medication is spelled with huge letters on the front. The pack also includes a sheet of paper that's got all the safety info you'd ever come to think of and more. Just Google "Burana 400mg" and you'll see what I mean.

fe****:
“1st Runner up” Jesus, who wrote that? Just awful.

Br**********:
In Australia, our pills are packaged in boxes/blister packs. It's easy to read the box, and even generic brands use different colours for different drugs. Many boxes even come with braille on the outside.

Ih*********:

Bet i’d say something like “and the moonlight for best oscar goes to picture”

ka***:
This is such a goddamn pretty video.
It’s a masterpiece. I love vox.

Gl***********:
I don't even understand why W.B. gets the blame for the Oscars mix-up, he's not the one who announced the wrong name and hesitated because he knew something was wrong

ga***********:

My mom gets prescriptions fron CVS and weve never gotten a design change :/

For those who are wondering, the outro music is “Spring Days” by Bruno Le Roux

YouTube: Wanna watch a 2 year old video about badly designed things to read?
Me: sure???

Gu************:

Hi,
I would love to have this content captioned in portuguese so I could show it to my students. Youtube has a tool that allows any community member to contribute in such translations and I could do it myself, but you have that feature disabled in this video. I understand that you may have concerns over the quality of such translations, and that's probably the reason why its disabled. But is there any way that we can make that possible?
Vox's content is always very well-researched and useful. It's a pity that we don't have this content available for wider audiences, such as non english speakers. There are many cases on youtube of big channels that use this community translation feature with great success.
thanks

I Love when you make videos about graphic design !! MAKE MOOOORE

Ro******:
What was that music at the end? EDIT: found it! http://www.milesofmusik.com/sites/default/files/tracks/KOS/477/KOS-477_10%20Spring%20Days.mp3

by****:

I like the outro song :)

Br************:
First thought before finishing the video: Why is the category at the Oscars at the bottom? It's even below a seperating line. I totally missed the category until you highlighted it.

JL****:

Alternative video title: How bad typography got us the Iraq war and killed hundreds of thousands of people

Ma****:
"Better typography could have changed US history" - let that sink in.

OO*:

I can’t believe million dollar companies/Industries can’t hire good designers or think to have good a better design

Ju****:
Here in Australia, instead of having those fit side by side boxes, it’s one long as hell sheet

Jo********:

All of this could be solved by not having the Oscars.

Is***********:
Suggestion: MAKE THE CARD A SCRIPT IN LARGE FONT.

"The award for best ______ goes to ______ for __________."

Mi*****:

In short: Make the Design CLEAR. CLARITY over fancy design.

Al**:

These Vox videos have been outstanding for as long as I've been subscribed. Fantastic work. The Verge are trying to imitate but can't compete, which is bizarre because they're both owned by Vox Media!

Ro***********:
Those aren't random or confusing numbers at the top of the pill bottle label, it's actually a quite important number, it's the prescription number. Patients who take medication regularly have to refill their prescriptions usually once a month, and each time, they have to call the pharmacy for a refill before they go to the pharmacy to collect it. The pharmacy asks you the prescription number and that's the only way they will be able to track your prescription down and provide you with more medication.

TH***************************************:
I have anti depressants and anti anxiety/ sleeping medication and one time I accidentally took three sleeping pills after mistaking the same bottle for a different bottle. I took my normal sleeping pill then remembered to take my anti depressant which I take two of to get the proper milligram intake. I slept for over 24 hours and my grandmother thought I was dead, no one could wake me up :/ I had to paint the top of my bottles just to be sure it wouldn’t happen again. It shouldn’t be my responsibility to make medicine distinguishable enough I don’t overdose. But hey, if I OD and end up going to the hospital that more money in their pockets right? The meds I need after that? Even more money. I think you all see where I’m going with this.

Zi***********:

The design of the card played NO ROLE in the case of the 2017 Academy Best Picture presentation, as compared to 2015 Miss Universe, where it did factor significantly.

The Academy Awards error was cause primarily by distracted PW&C staff back stage accidentally handing Best Picture presenters Warren Beatty & Fay Dunaway the duplicate Best Actress in A Leading Role envelope instead of the one for Best Picture.

Where the design of the envelope itself was a factor was the fact that the lettering on the outside was formally discrete. For 2018 that changed, with the same discrete font in the middle, but duplicated, playing card style, in gigantic point-size that would be unmistakable in any lighting condition or no matter how chaotic an environment - such as an Oscars ceremony.

Additionally, cell phones were to remain in the PW&C staff pockets for the duration of the awards portion of the broadcast, so the only thing they could have their hands on were the envelopes containing winners cards for the various movie award categories.
