Summary Comments : [TEDx Talks] Power Foods for the Brain | Neal Barnard | TEDxBismarck

Ma****:
What a great talk! He makes it very simple, to summarize do these for reducing risk of Alzheimer's and increase well being:

1. Eat colorful fruits and veggies daily: blueberries, grapes, broccoli etc for better memory.

2. Take Vitamin E to eliminate free radicals from brain but not just from pills but from foods like nuts / seeds (just a few), spinach, mangoes etc.

3. Reduce trans-fat from foods like donuts, pastries; and saturated fats like from Bacon, meat, cheese/dairy.

4. Reduce metals like iron, copper. Do not use iron skillets etc.

4. Exercise: nothing crazy, just do brisk walk three times a week, up to 40 minutes each time.

Do all of the above and one can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's by 80% even if you have the gene.

You also need vitamin D. Deficiency increases rate of decline in Alzeimers. My Mum was independent for 10 years when I was able to keep her levels topped up. She deteriorated this year when I wasn't able to see her and make sure she took it.

Ja*******:
I always was saddened when I saw my mother, who had dementia, being fed sugary punch and white bread at the assisted living facility she lived at for 12 years.

His talk makes so much sense.

I am a person who is very concerned about physical and mental health. I am on a healthy diet recommended by my dietitian who works for National Health Service UK. I am also doing aerobic exercises and brisk walking regularly. But I never knew that brisk walking makes my hippocampus bigger, which improves my memory. I am so grateful to Dr Neal Barnard. This is one of the best presentations I have ever come across.

Ph**********:
Good for you. It's high time somebody took the FDA to task on their lobbyist oriented nutritional "science."

KC******:

That was an amazing talk! It was all very informative and easy to understand. Although, I wasn’t expecting to cry from watching this video. I couldn’t help but burst into tears when he talked about going back in time so he could talk to his dad about the things he found out.

El***:
aw he’s a great speaker: positive, forthcoming

This gives me hope and awesomeness inside me :)

Very good information, but do NOT underestimate the importance of sleep and stress. Not enough sleep and too much stress literally kills brain cells. And so do diet soda.

Hi***************:

"When u lose your memory u lose everyone who ever mattered to you" .. That statement is sadly so on point :(

Sa********:
I suffered from sever attention deficit all my life. As a child I used to think I was just not as smart as the other kids. Over the years I learned to cope with my ADD. Finally in my late 40's when it started affecting my work, I decided to go on medication. Fast forward a couple of years I heard about the Keto Diet and Intermittent Fasting. I decided to give that a try to lose some weight and surprisingly I noticed a change in my focus and clarity. I was all of sudden have bursts of super focus and my mind was not wandering. I have been on the Keto diet for now 6 months and have no trouble focusing. I am not medical expert but I love the new found focus, I have lost 35 pounds. I am also a long distance runner, before Keto I would carb load before a race like a half marathon, now I run a half marathon without putting an ounce of carb in me. So though I don't claim to be an expert, I love the positive changes that Keto and Intermittent Fasting has made in my life. Just my two cents !!!

Jo********:

The TED people have said: "The speaker makes assertions about a specific diet that lack sufficient scientific evidence for general prescription." But they have not provided any evidence for their claims while Dr. Barnard is simply presenting the carefully selected studies that do indeed meet rigorous scientific research criteria, and why should we NOT trust them? It would seem that TED has opinions but no research, while Dr. Barnard bases his opinions on research. This feels like an abuse of TED authority, not good science. I find Dr. Barnard's arguments and research summaries compelling. Thank you, Dr. Barnard
