Everytime someone uses the argument "it's a childrens holiday" I laugh and make a point that it's a childrens holiday that is organised by adults. It is adults who get to choose what they want the kids to see and learn. It is adults sho should use their common sense and ethical knowledge to make good decisions for the children. This debate has nothing to do with the children and everything to do with the adults, who with their age, really should know better.

lynching also used to be a tradition. tradition does not mean justifications

I remember seeing something like this in Bruges, Belgium in December 2019. I just wanted to throw up when I saw it, disgusting

This was honestly very disturbing to watch. Thank you for the information

At least comments haven’t been disabled, so I am able to get a more complete understanding of the issue.

"A black moor from Spain" sooo the dude the wrote the tale didn't like black people, muslims or the spanish. I does look racist...

Ro************:
I’m Dutch, and they changed it to “roetvegen pieten” so there are only a few strokes to represent the chimney :)

Gr**************:

I moved to the netherlands from new york city for a semester abroad and i cant even tell you the shock i felt when i walked into the apotheek (pharmacy) and the entire place was decked out in .... this mess

I hate this ‘tradition’. I remember hating this holiday as a kid.

ma*************:
People who call dark people zwarte piet are just mentally ill, i have a friend, he's black, he's one of my best. But he got called zwarte piet all the time, i think that is what causes the tradition to fall over.

i0*****:
Bruh, just because one black person says its ok doesn't mean every black person says its ok

As a Belgian I never understood the discussion about black Piet in the Netherlands, because the way I learned about Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet was that Zwarte Piet is Sinterklaas' best friend. And he carried the heavy bags because Sinterklaas is super old and Zwarte Piet is younger, so it's just a younger man helping his best friend. How can that be wrong? Also were I live the story of how Zwarte Piet got to be Sinterklaas' best friend was because Sinterklaas saved Zwarte Piet as a child from slavery and Zwarte Piet was so grateful for Sinterklaas helping him that they became best friends and he started to help the old man.

I didn't realise they had such a different story about it in the Netherlands. For me it's actually more disturbing to think about the fact that a random old guy comes in to your home to give you a present for being a good child and that he decides to punish the bad than that his best friend turns about to be a black person.

St********:

The most poignant and revealing statement: "Of course, it's political. You don't invent a tradition like this in innocence."

Th***************:
And if it was so innocent why are the people publicly against it getting racist threats?

an**********:

Human beings are so weird. We don't like each other. We should try to become aware to our own prejudice to compromise.

Co************:

Seeing white people with black paint on their faces is really scary to me. Idk why. It gives me nightmares

th*******:

Did he really just say the black people “like” it because they don’t have to paint their face?? Oh my goodness. This is awful!

Aa*******:
This story went from Belgium to the Netherlands faster than the German army

No*******:
It's so interesting to me how brutal kids stories were in the past.
I like them a lot because these stories treat kids seriously, people didn't think too much about the impact on the kids and just expected them to cope with it.
Just like the way they are expected to cope with things when they get older.

J*:

Their own prime minister really used the "I'm not racist my friends are black" card

They always be like Go BaCk To aGriCa im like bish yal brought us here

As a black guy grewing up in The Netherlands i say: Dont argue on what you only think you see, learn about it first. Your history started only in 1775 based on "The Declaration of Independence", European history goes far beyond that. My church in my country is even older than your country.

Tradition doesn’t mean it’s ok to do now ... there are many traditions that have been thrown out because it’s not the 1700s anymore

Du*******:

i’ve exeprienced this tradtion my whole life and started doubting it when i was 14 years old, before this i never thought about it being a racist tradtion but when i saw past my nostalgia and looked back at history, it became so clear for me that it had something to do with our black slavery past.

Also when i noticed that a zwartepiet had a white spot on he’s neck was the moment i found that Sinterklaas was’nt real this means that i thought that these zwartepieten where black people...

Bl********:

I wonder if Justin Trudeau ever got in on any of the festivities!

AC************:

People will never get it until it’s them!

A lot has changed since the making of this documentary. The prime minister has changed his opinion, black Pete is completely removed from all official calibration and all major stores has stopped selling products with depictions of black Pete (like the chocolate black Pete).

It*********:
I remember there used to be a tradition where I’m from like this. Saint Nicholas and black Pete were there. Black Pete was usually a white person with black paint. I always thought it was from the chimney, so I really didn’t think much of it. Saint Nicholas and Black Pete would always come in a boat like 30 minutes after every kid arrived. We usually just played around that time. So when he arrived we were all seated in chairs, and then Saint Nicholas would call our names and make us sit in his lap, and Black Pete would give us one gift, and we can only open them as soon as every kid gets their gift. So that’s how the tradition went on. 3 years ago it got canceled because of hate and death threats. It was a nice tradition, and a lot of black kids went and a lot of Hispanics like myself went. We saw it as a normal thing we were innocent children we can’t really blame ourselves. If you’re wondering how I was there even if I was not Dutch, it’s because my friend is Dutch he was my best friend at the time so he invited me when I was 6 and that was our favorite tradition, and it’s something I miss but I never knew what it meant. So now I do and I wish it really had a different meaning to black Pete

Jo*********:
It's actually really tough. I live in the Netherlands and this year for the first time, my family isn't going to celebrate this holiday. I have mixed feelings about it. Up until now I never realised how hurtful it could be because I never associated zwarte piet with black people, because the story was always told as someone who came from the chimney. Dark skinned people would also get painted when they played zwarte piet, and piet was a beloved character by all kids and adults. The Sinterklaas holiday is also very different than christmas, even when it features roughly the same characters. Sinterklaas was always the highlight of my year and I couldn't just give that up, because it had so many happy memories associated with it. Overtime, zwarte piet slowly changed and everyone agreed that these changes were for the better. As I grew up I realised that the orgins of zwarte piet were indeed black slaves, but the original tale of Sinterklaas tells us that he rescued these slaves and that they followed him as free men and women. I felt it was good that we were taking away aspects that could be seen as caricatures so we could fully switch to the "chimney" narrative. Zwarte piet lost his earrings, his red lips, part of his costume. Later they gave zwarte piet different hairstyles and sometimes different colours skin, like bright coloured, or patterns. I, like many other dutch people, was angry with the activists because they would show up to the arrival of Sinterklaas and would yell stuff about him being a racist and not being real. I didn't see how it could be racist. I did see thousands of kids present and saw how their beliefs were shattered. The police were handling the situation in a way that they wouldn't the disturb the party for the kids, and wouldn't ruin the holiday. Now I see how bad the situation was. I have never heard a kid call a poc a zwarte piet. I feel like most kids associate the character more with the costume and treats than with actual people of colour. However, I now realise that if it is hurtful to people, maybe it's time to change traditions.

Be***********:
I came to the Netherlands around Christmas time last year and I remember, I was walking with two friends of mine and a group of about seven white men and women shouted at us saying "zwarte Piet!!". At first I didn't get it but when one of the women called us the N word, I got to know that it surely wasn't a compliment. It really cut deep and I tried to make light of it. When I went to my bed, I searched it up and I just cried. Coming from a somewhat indigenous country, I wasn't used to such treatment and I was far away from home, at seventeen, it all came crushing down. Now I'm trying to get used to the country but that memory will live with me. To some this tradition is good but to others it is dehumanising and humiliating. I still face some racial profiling but i reached a point where I nolonger let it make me feel any less important.
