Playtime Comments : [Vox] Why rappers love Grey Poupon

Ch************:
"The more Grey Poupon was in people's ears, the more it was rapped by other artists in subsequent years" (8:26) WOAHHH THERE VOX!!

wa******:

About a month ago I was driving at night tired. I came to a stop next to a white truck with 2 guys in it. As I was coming to a stop, I was looking at the passage with a blank stare on face and we made eye contact. He signal me to roll down my window and ask me for something in a British accent. I didn’t really hear him, but it put a smile on my face because he was obviously not British. He goes on to say “at least I put a smile on your face. Enjoy your night”. It was very unexpected made me smile and made the rest of my night. Fast forward to now, I was watching a video of a guy explain the 10 things Hamilton the play got wrong and the video creator made a reference to this video. While watching this video, the scene at 3:50 came up and it clicked. The guy who pulled up next to me had asked me if I had any grey poupon in a British accent.

Mo***********:
3:50 - so that's what they said in Wayne's World!  We didn't have that brand in the UK, and had no idea what the joke was.

li********:
01:26 is this where they got the wee bit for the Family Guy Star Wars episode (I always wondered what that was about)

Nu****:

Oh. My. God. At 1:14 she mentions how "Grey Poupon" seems "ubiquitous."

In their most recent album, rap duo Ces Cru dropped an amazing track, the one they promoted most, titled "The Process (Guillotine)."

In the first verse, one of the lyrics goes:

"Rollin' up the green, pass it on,
GREY POUPON"

Who said this line?

It was the white member of Ces Cru. His rap name?

UBIQUITOUS.

Th***********:
2:07
"Grey Poupon
...Inserted itself into the American Lexicon"
nice one

people still quote the lick, once it is referenced a few times, things start to become part of a genere's lore

FA*******:

Had no idea Grey Poupon was just mustard.

sn****:
$1.59 vs $1.00 "nearly DOUBLE"

Za*********:
Estelle Caswell, I don't know if you're in charge of these hip hop videos from vox or what but they're absolutely phenomnal. Could watch these for hours and hours

Cr**:

I watched this last night and this morning I was listening to the new Brockhampton album and the song Alaska is says “wtf is grey poupon” I feel like I’m gonna notice or a lot more in music lol

Ia********:

yo this is some great research

Un*******:
My favorite is when DMX says that when he pulls up next to your car. It won't be for Grey Poupon.

Me*************:

love seeing Open Mike Eagle pop up in things around the net.

ni**:
Seems logical that artists who used the word in the 90s had it stuck in their head from commercials in their youth (the 80s). then in 2007, artists had it stuck in their head listening to their 90s counterparts while in their teens. So Grey Poupon will be probably be eternally recycled and revamped throughout the upcoming decennia's ;)

Al*********:

In the humble music video, kendrick passes the grey poupon through the window of the car the same as in the commercial. dope

Ka**************:

This was flawless, I love the Hip-Hop dissections. I love that someone especially a female is so passionate about Hip-Hop.

Th******:
Every video I've seen from Estelle Caswell has been a gem. Cherish her, Vox.

Ji****************:

Easy rhyme, high class status symbol. There, I saved you 10 minutes of life.

La*****************:

My grandma jars her homemade strawberry jam in Grey Poupon jars :)

Ma********************:
"I got that grey poupon. You've been warned. Beef return well done filet mignon."

Da*******:
Girl, you are finer that Grey Pupon. Bring over one of your friends and we can get our sandwich on.

se*******:
I dont know what to do with this information

ra*******:
tech n9ne has a song where he says I don't wanna know if you have any grey poupon, just great punan and a laid coupon

Du***:

"That Grey Poupon, that TED Talk"

Et*********:

This is the most useless and helpful information of all time

Re******:
Most the people that listen to hip-hop weren't alive (or old enough to remember) when the Grey Poupon commercials of the '80s were being
run. So they need this video to understand why it's used so much in rap songs...like champagne, diamonds, VIP status, and $$$. Old people like me already know.

Fi********:

I just tried grey poupon on a sandwich last year. Damn good my brother!

Ri*******:

All I can think about is the Fresh Prince episode where Jeffrey is making Will a fancy sandwich and he realises that he turned as soft as Carlton when Carlton asked for the same but heavy on the Grey Poupon

bb*****:

This is such a well put together video, honestly. Very well thought out and researched.

Ta****:

I really need to try this mustard.

ta*******:

Hahahahahahhahaha
*yacht pulls up next to you* Would you happen to have any grey Poupon?

Ka*********:

Grey Poupon is to rap, what “the lick” is to jazz. Cool

He**********:

That knowledge on rap and hop...awesome skills girl!

Ja***:

"i should go to bed"

somehow ends up watching a 10 minute video about a type of mustard with a rhymable name

12*****:
now that only leaves me with ONE question:

do you have any grey poupon?

Ma***:

Great, now I’m gonna reflexively tense up any time I hear the word ‘crouton’ in a rap verse.

Bu******:

It’s important to note the commercial was also so successful because of how funny it was to hear the word Poupon said out loud and then how fun it was to repeat it. If it was almost any other word I doubt the commercial would have taken off like it did.

le**********:

dope........Kendrick Lamar just referenced grey Poupon

Na******:
This channel is like I’ve found gold seriously because I have music playing from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep I mean unless like obviously if I’m hanging out with somebody they don’t wanna listen to music I obviously respect peoples environments and what not but and I do give myself like an hour out of every day I’ve just silence other than that like music is always constantly playing so this is like I mean that’s just with what’s going on I’m just so happy I found this thank you so much for the
