4:23 I feel the opposite way when there's too much food I almost feel claustrophobic and I try to eat a lot more in order to waste less because I was brought up to not waste food.

Vox: Talks about world food problem.
Also vox: Shows only America.

Ch***********:
i think the bigger problem is shops throwing food away and the perfection standards in the industry and supermarkets with their ruthless advertising and making you buy things you dont need

Su*************:
The same can be said about the Clothing industry. So Much goes into manufacturing of clothes and yet so many go to waste thereby damaging the environment when there are millions of people around the world that could do with decent clothing and not to mention the issues such as child labor that goes on.

Ch**************:

Wasting food is considered a sin in my country.

Re*************:

People don't like whitespace in their fridge? I'm the exact opposite. Overfilled fridges with old food drives me crazy

El**********:

I wish there was a way to send a portion of all that wasted food to the good people of Venezuela. They are literally starving to death. :(

su***********:
I also found that u need to be full stomach... before going for shopping, my shopping bill reduced by 15 %. Blame genetics and our poor ancestor but it works.

An********:
This is so interesting. Just makes me remember when I use to work at Panda Express in Tulsa. After our shift was over there was so much food left over and we were not allowed to give it away or take it home. We had to throw away the extra food. Which is equivalent to 5lb+ of food and it makes me sad.

a:
i've also noticed that when you get a big plate and don't fill it, people will be like "that's all you're eating?" even when it's a good amount already
and then when there's free food laying out, there's usually a hesitation to go grab it, like everyone is waiting for the first group to go and then follow like "oh it's ok to eat this."
i guess that's cause of trying not to look "fat" or whatever and also bc of social instincts just to follow, but it's dumb and a lot is wasted just cause of that. idk how to explain it but hopefully that got across well.

Th******************:

For example, in Brazil, where I live, there's a law that PROHIBITED food donation. Why? Because the ones who receive the food, if they get sick by food poisoning, they can sue the donators. So big companies prefer to throw away tons of perfect good food to dont have the possibility to get sued. And that's just one more example of absurdities bad politics can do.

Re************:
Back in my old school not only did we have to finish our food but we also had to only get a smaller portion of food to prevent it (we could get seconds).

Ga***********:
If the companies made less food there would be less food waste
They throw away everything that is not "perfectly shaped"
They produce more than what people can eat.

Be*****:

I live in Texas and people here are beyond stupid when it comes to wasting food. If the donuts from that morning are still there in the afternoon, they get thrown away. Didn't like your meal and took two bites out of it? Throw it away. That package of ham expired today? Don't even bother checking if it's still fresh or not just throw it away. I can go on for awhile.

When all else fails I put the food in my compost pile and let the squirrels, raccoons, opossums, cats, birds, insects and any other critter eat what they want. Nothing goes to waste in my house. I'm also a bit of a horder but at least I have the economy and environment in mind.

os********:
Reminded me of old times when I worked as a waiter and at the end of each shift we had to through away all the leftover food. Some delicious and also expensive desserts went straight to trashbag. So behind single consumers and those, who order food for some events, there is also a whole industry to change.

th*******:

In The Netherlands there is an app called Too Good To Go, where companies can offer their leftovers for a small price to people in the city. Works great for restaurants, hotels and bakeries!

Ki*******:
My fridge actually takes me hostage because it always makes me think "how am I going to eat it all before it spoils".

Ch*****************:
It still makes me absolutely upset since Junior High that people in public schools throw away perfectly edible food! I was so angry about it I decided since 7th grade that I'll make a five min meal at home, take it go school to eat, the plastic container (in the teacher's lounge large sink) wash it, and do it all over again. I had my Go2 thermos with juice or water. mic drop
Then again it's gonna take people years to realize it, at least I'm part of the change ARE YOU PART OF THE CHANGE?

Wa**:

"It's the hunger games"

Im***************:

Being from middle east and living in the US, I have had another observation: In developed countries, the production process is more efficient with less waste, but consumers waste a lot, simply because their money can afford this!
In developing or under-developed countries, many consumers cannot afford wasting food and the level of wasting it is way lower, but on the other side, the production process is less efficient and more wasteful.

Am**********:
Copia should get in touch with Uber. They could use their carpool or food delivery service to pick up food and drop it off along routes it is already taking. It would save Copia time and energy, while increasing food delivery. Pitch it to Uber as a strong PR move; believe me, with all the bad press they're getting, they'll take it immediately! If not go to Lyft, etc.

Da*****:
"Damn did I get hungry watching this!" pauses and gets to the fridge. Nothing in there. "this problem truly doesn't concern me" :3

Sh***********:

Me a Asian: if I do not finish my food, I get spanked.

In Dubai , we have fridges outside mosques , where we can put leftover food in the fridge and the less fortunate take anything they need.

Al*************:

There needs to be another layer: for the uneaten and spoiled food, we need composting. Put the completed compost back onto our fields so we don't have to use as much chemical fertilizers. Process night soil to make it safe, and then use it as fertilizer too.
We can do so much to re-use and reduce.

Da**********:
I work in an Australian hipster burger shop and I always have to clear tables and the wastage is crazy! When we clear the tables we have to put all the food wasted into a container, it's a big 30L tub.
I have thrown out entire milkshakes, entire fries and also massive remainders of burgers. I wish my owners would make smaller portions for the fries at least to help, we sell really big portions and that is the main issue.

sa*********:

I'm so glad I was taught not to waste food. My father always say that the food is fruit of the labors of farmers so we should appreciate their labor and also be reminded that we are blessed with a meal unlike those who cannot get food on their plate. I wish my friends could also see that when they waste their food.

Mi*******:
In India we are taught from childhood to not throw or leave food . And if we do parents always say many people work hard for this amount of food and you get it with ease so don't waste it. Finish it.

Ab******:
Why did I expect
“If food waste was a country..”

Ch***:

This video should be the most viewed video on YouTube. Very important, spread the word.

Wy***:
What if they used the foodcam idea at Walmart or another grocery store in an app form. So when food is about to go bad they send out a notification that the lower-priced food (kinda like a clearance sale) is available.

Ph*********:
Almost every college student: "Free food? MINE!!!"

Fl************:

When you live in a third world country you'll immediately be taught the importance of food. You don't ever dare to waste what you're given.

Va**************:
I used to work as a waiter in a large resort in Colorado and my colleagues and I were made to throw away so much untouched quality food every single day, that I feel sick of myself. We were made to throw the food away as according to the company policy, it was illegal for employees to eat (or take home) any of the leftovers from the function meals... I feel that it is better and more generous to feed your poor minimum wage employees, rather than just throw away everything that your special pretentious clients waste.

Br*********:
Individual people and households do waste a ridiculous amount of food, but the food producers and shops waste an absolutely phenomenally high amount of food. Definitely practice reducing food waste in your own life, but also buy the 'ugly' produce and demand that retailers stop with such crazy food waste too, since they waste more than you'll probably ever even see in your lifetime, in just a short period. There's more than enough food being produced on Earth to make sure nobody ever goes hungry, and tonnes upon tonnes of it is just thrown out before it ever hits the shelves for not meeting aesthetic requirements for retail.

Bl*******:

Here are some tips to reduce food waste:
-go grocery shopping on a full stomach. If you go being hungry you'll feel inclined to buy more food (which you probably don't need)
-if you live with roommates, buy some things collectively (bread, ketchup, cereal) that you know are at risk of going bad if each buys their own
-if you're gonna buy a food item you haven't tried before, buy only a little in case you don't like it
-don't throw wasted food directly in the trash can, instead throw it in an airtight see-through container. This will help you be conscious about what you throw away
-use small plates and small cups. You can always refill them but it will be hard to grab more food than you can finish.
