Playtime Comments : [Vox] Why South Africa is still so segregated

Ge****:

6:40 "too much housing, let's solve that problem"
Some time ago I read this SA military history blog and apparently NP even went so far as to downplay and hide all the victories and accomplishments of SA troops during WWII.

Gi**:

As a South African I can confirm that the Black leaders in charge also live in the "White" areas.

In********:

As a South African I can say it’s the useless governments fault, they’re too busy filling their pockets rather than building proper infrastructure or fixing the country’s many many issues

Da***************:
as a south african, it hurts to know that our government is so corrupt. all we can do is try our best and vote. violence is never the answer (someone really left a comment under this saying "guns are the answer to a tyrannical government". that's terrible. no.

Gr******:

My area is pretty diverse,I live in the west of jhb,and my neighbours are of quite a variety of races and cultures. I have noticed that the richer areas around where I live and work are predominantly white though.

Something R500 billion could’ve changed.

Oh God. It's so hard to listen to let alone live through.

De*****:

i just dont get it they know if we all come together we can be very powerful but yet we still stay segregated the sad part is this is everywhere

py******:

The USA had apartheid up to the 1960's and residential apartheid still applies in most US cities..

ru*********:
Thank you for showing papers and for talking with people. Here in the US, there's long been a tendency to throw the word "apartheid" very blandly, without talking about how it happened, what the process was and what this process did to people. The details of this are vital to our understanding of what today's South Africa looks like.

Mr****:
Thank you for covering this.

Bi*********:

I remember when I went to South Africa, we drove past a huge gated community in Cape town with a golf course in the middle. We'd heard earlier that there was a drought, so many of the townships didn't have access to clean water that summer... But the golf course had sprinklers flowing over it all day long. That pretty much summed up the situation across the country imo.

Cu********:
Some scars of history need more than time to heal, they need work as well.

Jo*************:

Seeing a foreign perspective of South Africa is always very interesting, because living in Cape Town this stuff is so normalised and when watching these videos it’s always eye opening again

No****************:

Your District 6 would be District 9 if you turned the map over to the way it is suppose to be.

De***********:
You thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Our Country Still Needs Leadership That Puts People First & Not Just Claims To Do So.

00****:

I remember going to Joberg for a research trip and conference in grad school and our two profs who brought us told us it was very serious that we never walked alone anywhere ever. We were to always stay as a group. There was one scary moment where someone was following us but just panhandling aggressively luckily with no weapon and the men in our group had to barricade him from following the rest of us. I'm from Canada and that trip changed my entire perspective, there was so much beauty and wealth and it was easy if you wanted to ignore the massive divide between the extremely rich and the extremely poor (if you literally put your head in the sand) its stark and jarring. I have some very good friendships after that trip I have to say however within my group and with our South African hosts in Wits University.

Em****************:
Same here in Port Elizabeth, sad to see such great people and cultures separated this way :(

Mr*********:

Honestly South Africa is such a beautiful place.. I just find it really sad... I wish we could just live in a world were we all just help and respect each other as human beings...

Di*************:
It hits hard when you learn about people being racially segregated and then see actual people who were affected by apartheid and are still alive. It just reminds you of how very recent apartheid was.

Pa********:
In University, I have classmates that can't afford data and others who are driving convertibles to school everyday.
This is just an example that displays the growing inequality in SA.

A decent second hand car will cost you at least R50k
1Gb of Data costs around R80 I think.

Sl*************:
US Colleges in 2021: this looks great, lets apply it to our campuses!

Ke********:
Thank you!! Showing my students TODAY as we are studying South African Government. I am in Savannah Georgia, USA.

Oi****:

Imagine trying to get home after a night at the pub

Lo***********:

As a South African: our current government is still ruling with the restricting apartheid minds..... do not realize the potential of financial and economical growth.

su********:
This is only 1% of the whole story

B*:

The funny part was that Nelson probably also moved from Nomzamo to Strand eventually XD

Si************:
For once an international video about SA that doesn't completely miss the mark.
