Playtime Comments : [TED] This could be why you're depressed or anxious | Johann Hari

S*:

No-one has ever said "The cows that are waiting, all around us" with more deep meaning to it than this guy. 20:17

ki********:

16:30 seriously!!!!

be**********:

7:45 "This is what every depressed person needs, and it's what every depressed person deserves."
This line straight up gave me goosebumps and made me tear up. As someone who struggled with mental illness but always got brutally blamed and dismissed just for feeling the way I did, I never in my life felt this understood and exposed by a talk. What an incredible and heartfelt message.

li**********:
16:30 is such an awakening statement

Dw**********:
"Your depression is not a malfunction, it's a signal." Excellent TED Talk.

so********:

I once told a trusted friend I was depressed. His response was, "What do you have to be depressed about?" in a very dismissive tone. He may as well just have smashed me in the face.

Dr********:

The system of life we live in, the system of money, needs to change. We need to have more meaning in life. It should be love, community, happiness. But we’re never going to get there because people will never give up money. Money is power. And without power, it seems like there’s no order. So the only way we can get there is to stop hungering for power. Damn life as a human sure is great, huh.

Ro******:

Jack's mom: you sold our cow with 5 what now?
Jack: but they're magic.

Sa******:

You’ve changed my view on depression completely. Excellent talk.

Ja********:

God bless you! I've had PTSD since the Gulf war as a Marine. Anytime I'm honest I get a new medication.

Pi*********:
If you dont have abusive parents, you won the lottery.

Ba**************:
No one is gonna comment that he sounds exactly like James Corden?

ch**********:

I’m depressed and anxious because I hate being made to work for money.

Tu**********:
“Together, we can figure out and fix this problem.” • Beautiful talk

He***************:

We're human beings with unmet needs - I need a moment with that.

La*******:
My chronic major depression and generalized anxiety were the result of years of trauma and it took decades to fight to find the right drug combinations to get me to where I wasn't having breakthrough symptoms. I'm finally able to heal and learn how to function and enjoy each day. Not everyone is the same, and the solution isn't always as simple as you suggest.

Q*:
To whoever reads this: I love you.

TB**********:

Another reason why we are depressed and anxious is because we are all stuck in offices, living like robots, running an endless race on a hamster wheel we will never win.

Ni********:
our society constantly shames people who want to feel included; we're demanded to be independent and not care what others think. Evolution highly disagrees with that!

Ro********:

This is the first “self improvement” talk that I’ve ever heard that makes good sense and doesn’t blame the victim. It was powerful and compassionate and very encouraging.

Li**:

This hit home for me.
I'm close with my family but over the years I've found it harder to talk to them about certain things. I've experienced more and more things that I can't talk to them about. Whether it's my love life (which I can't talk to them about because it would be awkward), school life or friendships.

I used to be able to speak to my friends but I learned that those people were not in fact my friends and that they'd discuss my issues with other people. I couldn't trust them so I no longer talk to them about anything of substance. I stopped looking for and having friends for this reason.

I find myself having so many things that I would love to talk about with someone but nobody to talk to. I even tired to seek help but my doctor told me "first get on this medication, come back in a week, then I'll schedule an appointment for you with a therapist". Safe to say I never went back because I don't like the idea of being on medication for possibly my whole life without even having a conversation first.

Maybe having a community could help me. Having people that I can trust. I'll look into this more seriously and I'll look for a professional to speak to as well. I gave up after my first try 2 years ago (because it took A LOT for me to even talk to the doctor) but this video inspired me to keep trying. Thank you

Li*:
This TEDtalk validated my emotions more than any actual person in my life ever has - and he wasn't even talking to me personally!
Brilliant speech.

Ao*********:
What a great talk. I'm tearing up repeatedly along the course.. :'(

Al**********:
"We need to talk less about chemical imbalances and more about the imbalance in the way we live."

Li***:

Instructions unclear, I'm now a depressed cow owner.

Lu*********:

Johann in 2019: We are the loneliest we have ever been as a society.
2020: Hold my mask

An***:

"These signals are telling us something we really need to hear." This hit me hard. I've known something is off for a long time and have ignored it and here I am in 2020 - depressed, drugged up and anxious.

Ra***:
"Pride is not the opposite of shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame."
-Uncle Iroh

Ch*************:

well damn i need to buy a cow

JR****:
I earnestly wish I wasn’t so deeply depressed so that this ted talk could have made a difference for me. I’m at least happy I decided to watch. Maybe that means I’m trying to survive.

M:

when he said 'we need to talk less about chemical imbalances and more about the imbalances in the way we live' i felt that

Iw********:

I absolutely agree with the “we are filled with junk values” part.

Lu*********:

I was depressed for so long that I just got use to the feeling and thought everyone else kinda felt that feeling of being numb . It took me a couple chats with my family to realise that something was wrong with me and then I got closer with them and have never felt happier since. I got my life in order and just looking ahead.

Sh***:
Wow!! This is the best ted talk ive watched

Ma********:
I'm depressed because some people made me believe i was never enough and now I think this way too...

Le******:

Every depressed person is a human being is a person with unmet needs. . Intervention with loving caring people is paramount

LY****:
This was a really good Ted talk

Li*******:

I started having extreme anxiety this year. And I can’t shake it. It’s so scary. I been through a lot this year My ex girlfriend passed. My dog of 16 years passed. Then covid 19. All in one year. Then my Gma got covid. I got covid. My whole family. Things have been shifting so fast. I used to be the Person people can come to. Now I’m in this mind state where everything gets me so petrified. & My heart palpitates like crazy. I hate it. But hopefully I can get through this man. It’s a horrible feeling. Anyone going through this I wish you the best.

AK***********:
“Put your hand on the left side of your chest. Feel that beat. That’s purpose. You are here for a reason.” Edit: (Any relations-) I stab myself with a pencil till I bleed. I cut- But I’m just another emotional girl- I can put on a fake smile, nobody will notice. I want to be in a different time in the world. I hold a knife to my thigh. But in the end, I’m not brave enough to take my own life. But what if I get “braver”... Will I still be fighting the mind alone? I’m living in a body that wants to live but a mind that wants to die. When will it end. It might be a hill, but what if it is an everlasting circle- just keeps going. Then what would I do? Yep I would commit suicide if it gets to the point where it has been too long, but it has gotten to the point of 2 1/2 years- it’s getting old. If someone truly cared, then wouldn’t I have been getting/gotten the help I needed? What I they don’t care. I’m trapped in my mind- why can’t I defeat this? Why am I still here. Is there purpose? Nahh.

wi********:
“We are the first human beings ever to disband our tribes.”

“Don’t be you, don’t be yourself, be ‘us’, be ‘we’, be part of a group.”

“Junk values have taken over our lives and made us mentally sick.”

“We’ve been trained to look for meaning and value in all the wrong places”

“Junk values don’t meet your psychological needs, they don’t lead to a fulfilling life.”

“In this culture we do not live by the things we know... we live in a machine that is designed to get us to neglect what is most important about life.”

“How can you dedicate more of your life to live by things of meaning and purpose”

“Create meetings to articulate and reinforce our values...to take us away from the avalanche of incorrect voices.”

“Your depression is not a malfunction, it’s a signal, it’s telling you something - it’s not a sign of weakness or madness, or purely biological.”

“It’s only when we truly respect and listen to these signals, that we will find our way out and to a more meaningful life.”
