5:39 You seem to be the great attractor...for flys.

I love the toughts you have. :)

Fa*************:
This video let me think of something and I'm probably wrong. I just can't see how.
Let's say we have two actors, A and B. They are separated, as in the video and their hypothesis is that speed of light is c in every direction. Actually, the reality is that speed of light is c/2 from A to B and infinite from B to A. On day 1, A sends a message to B and the message says: "I sent this message at 12:00". B receives the message after 20 minutes but he thinks it was only 10 and replies "I received your message at 12:10". A receive this message instantaneously, at 12:20. They think speed of light is the same and takes 10 minutes from A to B and viceversa but they're wrong. Regardless of the truth, the point is that their clocks are synchronized. Now on day 2, B wakes up and send a message with this content "I just woke up and sent you this message at 7:00". A receives the message and look at his clock and he discover it's 7:00 at his place as well. Now A understand the hypothesis was incorrect and speed of light is not the same in every direction.

If this doesn't happen, we're sure the speed of light is the same in every direction.

Where am I wrong?

Edit: I can see my error. Their clocks are not synchronized at all. The one of B is 10 minutes behind. Great.

Ri*********:

I go to the university where the physicist who published the paper at 8:39 works. He was my girlfriend's lab professor.

No***:
Me at 3:00: Start the clocks at 0.5 km & move them apart at the same rate so they stay synced...

Me at 3:11: Oh right! That's a lot easier!

Me at 4:22: So start with the clocks at 0.5 km...

Me at 10:45: Ah. Dang it...

Mi**********:

10:00 i convinved myself that different mesurements with the sync thing more to the left and then more to the right might get u an idea about one way speed? Pls tell me how im wrong.

Vi********:

14:15 it is showing c/2. It should be 2C isn't it? Please share some thoughts

Go******:

4:06 - "Or have they?"
I feel like this was a missed chance to put the vsauce theme on

Ca*********:

What if you took the setup from 9:50 but you would add a light that would illuminate if the signal is recived and a super slow mo camera to see if they really did go off at the same time

"So someone has measured the speed of light...or have they?"

Huge Vsauce moment right there

dr************************:

Every extra minute watching this makes you scream louder internally.

19***********:

So this is why my crush is doesn’t reply, the signal must be slower from that direction...

Ig**************:
Doesn't this actually mean light rays could escape a black hole's event horizon if pointing at the right direction?

Ko*****:

i couldn’t figure out where he was going with this, until the high-speed camera guy pointed out that he calculates the time over distance between two points and then I got it. Clever point.

Th***********:
Once we figure out how to fold space and travel instantaneously, we no longer have to move the second clock to from the first one to place it in the light beam’s direction

Ma************:

Let's say you have 4 clocks all in a line. The outer clocks have lasers that point towards the inner clocks. At the start, you bring all the clocks together in one line and sync them. Then, you split the line of clocks in 2 and separate them by some distance, we'll say 0.5 km. Then, after traveling that distance, you separate each couple by some distance, we'll say 0.5 again. Now, your two inner clocks are side by side and your outer clocks are equidistant from their respective inner clocks. At this point, you turn on the lasers and measure the time it takes to reach their respective inner clocks.

Does this factor out time dilation or is this similar to the provided example of 3 clocks synced then separated?

Even if it doesn't factor out time dilation, wouldn't you be able to compare the times on the two inner clocks?

De***********:

But how about the Doppler effect and the lensing of light caused by massive objects like galaxys? Would these phenomena work if the speed of light was instantaneous?

sb*******:
What did the photon say to the scientist?

"You can't c me."

Ib*****:
Well if your saying the high speed camera does not work to measure the one way speed of light than you cant measure anything accurately (mind you it’s marginal compared to the speed of light) because you always need the light from the object to bounce back to the camera.

It**********:
My brain AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Li************:
I know for a fact that the speed of light depends on direction, because sometimes when I sit at a traffic light I can see the BMW driver behind me flashing before I see the light turning green.

El************:

You’re breaking my brain with these last few videos.

Qu************:
So someone has measured the speed of light.
Or have they?
*Vsauce Music intensifies

ji*****:

That’s why going to work feels like a drag and coming home feels quick.

Mi********:

Could you use quantum entanglement and the toggle of spin to synchronize the clocks?

Li********:

"and the reply came back instantaneously" - That's Haruhi level of logic in the Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody episode.

De******************:
"We need synchronised clocks to measure speed of light, We need speed of light to synchronise our clocks".

Well that sounds like I need experience to get a job, I need a job to get experience. Doomed to fail. Sigh.

CG*****:
Great video. Despite getting a physics degree and teaching physics for years, I never came across this or thought about it. I was treating the video mostly as a 'fun to think about' sort of video, but your point at the end is really intriguing.

Jo*******:

When a physicist comes to an engineer with a question: "OH you're gonna do something weird arent ya?"

Jo***:

Law zero of physics: Einstein always has the last laugh.

Ch**********:
What about hypothetically sending a pulse of light towards a very massive object like a black hole, so that it curves around it and comes back? It may look like light travelled firstly forwards and then backwards, but considering non euclidean space curvature, light would have actually travelled in a straight line.

Vi******************:
He said "or have they?" I was kinda sad no vsauce music played

tw*********:
this video made me feel insanely smart for 19 minutes and 5 seconds.

Ni*****:

Destin was probably having a perfectly fine, normal day and then the phone rings. Now he has a broken brain.

Ha**********:
What if you mechanicaly start the two clocks at the same time by using a long arm or something. Wouldn't they both be in sync then.

Jo************:

If a person on Mars is sending messages constantly updating you how much time has passed on their clock then you would know it was instant.

Edit: I get how synchronization is a problem, but it seems so clear to me that you don’t need to synchronize your clocks to measure how much time is passing. Unless there’s time dilation but even then it seems you could account for that then begin measuring how much time has passed.

Like why bother setting the same time when I can just constantly tell you how much time is passing.

Lo********:
Ok brother man, I’ve been sitting in my room thinking about this for a while, coming up with new ways to figure it out. I realized right away that cameras are the best thing to use, but I didn’t know how to use them, so I started thinking of maybe different distances? Then it hit me, put like 5 cameras in a dark room, use a light source like something that can turn on without glass blocking it, the best thing I came up with was like heating up metal. Anyways, once the light source turns on, you will have cameras at different distances watching the light, now if this works correctly, you will be able to time the switch turning on, then the time it takes for the light to turn on after the switch is pressed, after that you should only be able to see a single source of light, and when each camera sees it is the speed of light, or the delay between each camera seeing the light. Again, you shouldn’t be able to see the wall if you do this correctly, because the wall isn’t closer to the light source than the camera is. So the cameras will all only see a floating light for a fraction of a fraction of a second. Please try this out, and if this works give a shout out to ya boy.

Da***************:

This might be an Idea:
The two clocks in opposite directions, synced via the middle box. So the middle box sends the start point. At this point it doesn't matter if the boxes are in relative sync or not. But if you send a stop signal from the same box and nothing have moved, if the speed of light is constant for one direction A but different for one direction B, the clocks will stop with double the sync offset. This might be a proof that c is different based on direction? If distance A != distance B then light moves different, but if they equal light in thoose directions move at same speed.

I don't know if this comment will ever get any attention, but might be a thought that wasn't brought up
