Playtime Comments : [TEDx Talks] I've lived as a man & a woman -- here's what I learned | Paula Stone Williams | TEDxMileHigh

Cl*********:

Around 9:30 when she was talking about the bike shop clerk, I thought to myself, "is she sure that's because she's a woman? In my experience, bike shop/auto mechanics/repairmen/IT guys always ask all those questions even when I confidently share my assessment of the issue..." and then I realized, "Oh wait. I just said, 'in my experience,' and well... I only ever experience life as a woman"

Edit: I also think I apologize in meetings without realizing it, oh dear.

Zi********:
9:48 "The more you're treated as if you don't know what you're talking about, the more you begin to question whether or not you do, in fact, know what you're talking about."

Ar********:

10:00 weakest clap I've ever seen in my life.

Ra*********:
2:49 when she said "whaaat" it somehow sounds like woodwind instrument

Bl**:

Ca**********:
11:32 when Paula said: "You are far more capable than you realize," the overwhelming feeling of empowerment, relief and thankfulness overcame me and all I could think was: "Thank you God for this wonderful human being and her story and I wish more people felt that way about themselves."

CE*********:

11:42 really has me crying

Ca**********:
09:38 YESSS

Sk**********:

12:41 "What do any of us really know about the shoes in which we have never walked?" <–– THIS, YOU GUYS. WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT THIS MORE.

And 11,000 people are not willing to honor the journey of another...

“ you know what I think about a lot , my brown skin daughter and daughter in law , what do they know that I am clueless about “

This was incredible!

'...to honour the journey of another' Beautifully ended. One of the best TED talks.

to*****:
The way she said: He called me Paul. Is just so pure and my heard broke a little bit.

Ai**********:
Wow! She made so many important points without even sounding preachy.. and incorporating humour so beautifully!

a:

Everthing she said is true, and even worse.
Being a female from Saudi Arabia. I am forced to do a lot of things that disrespect myself.
I am, as a woman, will always be less than a man. I bring shame to my family. I don't get education as my brothers. My own mother hates me for trying to be independent. She tries so hard to bring me down.
basically.. living as female in SA is just another word for slavery.
Also, really i dont get why i suffer, because my genitals.
this is really messed up.

Re**********:

"He called me Paula"...brought tears to my eyes.

cr******:

i love her scarf and her general energy i love her

Sa***:
I suspect that how a woman looks also make a difference to the men's reactions. They don't treat all women the same way.

Cl********:

"You don't have to apologise for being right" THANK YOU!

Ar******:

"The more you´re treated as if you don´t know what you´re talking about, the more you begin to question whether or not you do, in fact, know what you´re talking about."

Big point there. I experience this all. the. time.
Ladies (and gentlemen, and anybody, really), it´s time for us to be confident in what we know, and not let anybody tell us otherwise.

Cu*****:
Paula's explanations of these gender differences are just priceless! AND I admire her admission of the privilege she brought with her through her transition. What insight she has!

One of the best talks I’ve ever listened to! Thank you, and many blessings on your journey!

I want to be her friend.

I adore her TEDTalk. I feel like we could do a duet!

I love how she says "less of a body experience and more of a being experience."

“You don’t have to apologize for being right.” Words to live by.

Ta*************:
At no point did she claim to know what it is like to be a cis woman. She gave examples of how life has changed for her and revelations she has had. That's neither offensive nor demeaning.

Sy*******:
The women be cheering loud asf and the men look so called out and stunned. Says smthn

Lo*********:
Bravo to your 93 yr. old Dad, that's a wonderful man, and father

KG******:

The roaring applause when she talked about pockets

Id******:

"The call to authenticity is sacred" has to be one of my all time favourite sayings...

de***********:

Omg I cried at "The more you're treated as if you don't know what you're talking about, the more you begin to question whether or not you do, in fact, know what you're talking about."
The amount of times I had to hold my ground and, yes, apologize for being right and then simply being told I was wrong because they refused to listen. Did you know if you are in a game and you do not share your gender during a raid or an online arena battlefield w/e, if you do not share your gender, your team will assume you are male and you have a chance they will listen to your calls. If they somehow figure out you're a girl? Oh goodness, either prepare to be assaulted by a horde of lap dogs hungry for female attention throwing themselves at your feet or be prepared to be completely ignored and condescendingly told: "yeah but what do you know you're a girl/ you were boosted/ e-girl/ etc."

Ma***:
I could watch her for an hour

Ni*********:

Her experience with talking public really shows, she's really comfortable with an audience and it's a great speaker. So charismatic!

to*****:
This video is just so great. thank you.

Be********:
it was about 3 a.m. and suddenly I had a wet bed. it was a lot of fluid mixed with blood. I tried to get an appointment with the doctor and it was over a month wait. so I sent an email and the told him that something had ruptured in my uterus. he phoned me and said that I had probably just wet the bed. I disagreed and he disagreed with me. I said could you please get me an appointment with a gynaecologist and he finally agreed. I waited two weeks and nothing. so I went into the office and his receptionist gave me you have to phone in and make an appointment. I told her what had happened and she looked it up. he had forgotten to call the gynaecologist and she said she would remind him. finally got the appointment I felt I needed. but because he had waited I couldn't get in until after Christmas. about five weeks. the gynaecologist suggested I wet the bed. but she looked at me and low and behold she found strange tissue. I had to have a hysterectomy and soon because it was an aggressive cancer. so they took that out and I had to go for chemo too. both those doctors after telling me I probably wet the bed told me it was good they caught it so early. they would have sent me home with a diagnosis of bed-wetter if I hadn't squawked. remember, whether you are male or female you know your body best, don't take no for an answer when you know there is something wrong. I am still a pain in the neck to the world because I demanded a follow up.

Br***********:

When I worked in customer service, my coworkers and I decided to do an experiment for one week >> switch our names to those of the opposite gender. The decision came after our supervisor noted that all of the women had notably lower scores among customers than the men did. All we did was switch our names on emails and messages; otherwise it was business as usual. Sure enough, the men's scores went down, while the women's scores went up. I don't think the vast majority of people consciously mean to be sexist, but the fact is that sexism is very alive and real. The same can be said for racism and all forms of prejudice.

Mi****:

When I first moved into my new property I noticed my neighbour has parked his car right in front of the gate literally blocking my access. I went to him and politely said can you please remove your car in front of my gate. He was a 6 foot plus guy, he tried to look tall and said well the footpath is owned by the council anybody can park on it. I was tired after a long day of moving house and I just didn’t have the patience to baby talk. I turned around and said, I don’t care who owns the footpath you are blocking my access to my door move your car right now. He stood there for 5 mins mumbling something to himself and eventually moved his car from my gate. If this was a man asking to move a car it would have been half the time with half the drama
