Veritasium: So your conclusion is (..) that it produces no negative ions?
Scientist: We are certainly not able to detect any negative ions.
That's a true scientist's answer!

9:10 "Any chemist worth their salt". Nice pun .

Nowadays, it's so weird to watch a youtube-clip that has an interview, and the people are sitting so close to each other...I keep reacting, thinking "woah...think about the distance, you guys!!"
update 26 minutes later: couldnt go to bed so now i will watch more of the video
Da********:
0:45 "Positive ions make us feel bad, and negative ions make us feel good"
Sounds pretty ionic if you ask me.

Never knew those lamps were supposed to produce ions I thought they were just a cool decoration item.
Ja*******:
An atom says "Good heavens! I've lost an electron!" Another says "What? Are you sure?" The first says "I'm positive."

Had a therapist a few years ago who insisted her salt lamp would improve my mood while I was in her office. Now I feel less guilty about it not working lol
PH******************:
The only thing salt lamps have to offer is a nice glow.
Sa*****:
when I read that title I thought "of course they do, they produce light"
wasn't even aware of the negative ion myths
Ma***********:
Did you know there's actually a substance that does something similar to what the Negative Ions are being proclaimed to do? This stuff is very common around waves, waterfalls, trees, but can often be deficient enough to cause a noticeable effect in homes and businesses. It improves reaction times, mental clarity, and many other factors, and a deficiency can cause many symptoms ranging from slowness, and confusion, to headaches, dizziness, restlessness, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, and even death.
You can actually improve your health by installing special structures and pumps in your walls that allow this chemical inside to saturate the atmosphere inside, and it can have a notable effect on mood, and productivity.
This chemical is Oxygen.
If you want what these salt lamps claim they are giving you, try to take steps to keep your living and working spaces from getting stuffy, you need oxygen for your muscles, your brain, and many other processes. Sunlight, oxygen, open space, and seeing nature will do so much to enhance your mood, and health.
As Veritasium says, go take a walk outside, it'll do wonders for your mind and body.
Thumbnail: NO.
Me: Understandable, have a nice day.

I like to think that when he's walking with the camera he's actually grabbing us by the throat a dragging us along while rambling about ions and salt lamps

My roommate got one of these when we moved in together, and I said "you know those don't work right?" and he said "I know I just like how they look." I was like fair enough lol

I'm just amazed how great the thumbnail was. Wasn't trying to click bait. Just gsve the answer. What a legend

I like to imagine that he doesn't talk to anyone behind the scenes and just walks up to experts with a camera without introducing himself.

"Serotonin is like the primary neurotransmitter in your whole body."

“Are you an ion expert”
Doesn’t say yes but gives his list of qualifications that essentially says yes

Thank you so much for this video, my mom was taken by this type of stuff for some years now, and has been buying crystals, putting salt in some corners of the house and stuff like that for a while now, I always said to her it was a scam and that she was wasting money for nothing, but the simple lack of a scientist proof that this stuff worked wasn't enough. You have single handedly saved some more hundreds of dollars that would have been spent in the next few years, and made my mom take actual steps to help her mental and fiscal health THANK YOU
It lowered the gravitational inertia of your wallet.

Great video Derek! Pertinent in an age where people aren't willing to listen to each other and only attempt to persuade , ending up in even more biased and extreme positions. It was also a good example of how cognitive dissonance works both ways. I could feel myself getting frustrated at the first 3 minutes of the video when I believed you to be proposing an "unscientific" concept. Thanks for being a great example of how we can make science more well received by the general public by making it less patronizing. Science shouldn't be polarising.
