Ah yes, our future where everything has planned obsolescence built in. Also known as Wall-E.

“Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.” ― Oscar Wilde

h7*****:

this explains the common phrase, "they don't make 'em like they used to."

HE*************:
engineer: we made it last up to 25.000 hours
business person: great now make it last 1.000 hours
engineers: ಠ_ಠ

sa************:

humans: Let's save the world by lowering the waste

unhumans: Let's force humans to make more waste

TN****:

The LED has an achilles’ heel. The driver. The little circuit board that makes it work. That’s where they control the life span

va******:

"So we finally reached a point of what is essentially an everlasting light bulb" [me looks at the light that had a LED bulb replaced two times in as many years]

ge******:
The most wear on a lightbulb filament occurs from heating up and cooling down, the world’s longest lasting lightbulb never gets switched off. Additionally, the filament never experiences the cold shock of anything between 110v and 250v suddenly being ‘slammed’ into it

GR*******:

Topic aside, the way you narrate and tell the story is very engaging.

ma*******:

Amazing episode

Am***********:

It seems like planned obsolescence also snuffs out innovation. Like, we could be reaching the end of the road on certain technologies and ask "ok, what's next?" But instead we're keeping ourselves in limbo.

Tr*****************:

The irony is that corporations are working together for their own best interests but nobody is working together in ours.

Mr******:
In a deeper meaning he pointed out that many of our needs, if not the majority are fictitious. And the companies convinced us that we NEED all of these products.

Su*************:
It is good to control our desire to buy unnecessary things because they make us work for them and consume our life but doesn't improve it.

Of****:
I’ve heard of “right to repair” but never quite looked closely in it. I’ll be looking this up now.

Ph*******************:

can we talk about the absurdity of “mandatory planned obsolescence” as a solution to the Great Depression?

only humans could rationalize creating jobs we don’t need to do, making products worse than the ones we have, all to rescue us from an objectively artificial crisis. we’ve certainly got a knack for mass delusion.

br*******:

Shout out to Louis Rossmann and his efforts towards right to repair.

Ma***:
I'm a simple man, I see right to repair and I click the thumbs up. Planned obsolescence is all well and good, assuming you have an eternal supply of materials and a black hole to dump your trash into.

Lo***********:
8.5 million people watch you, and you planted a seed today in their mind about right to repair. Thank you.

Su****:

What really gives me hope with these kinds of videos, talking about a major issue in society, is that it seems that no matter the issue, we're slowly starting to fix them.

Pi*******:

The exact same thing happened with shaving razors many years ago too.

Dr*************:

Damn this was super interesting. Great content

Si**********:
The only trusting conspiracy-type video i've ever seen.

Be****:

It is actually outrageous that planned obsolescence isn't discussed more. It is definitely one of the main issues we need to solve in order to save our planet.

Me*****:

The fact that they were able to get away with this really angers me. Imagine how many other industries might have the same kind of agreement between major companies, like pharmacuticals.

Ja************:
Huge respect for putting the ad in the end. I watched the whole video to the end to support this. :)

Dy*********:
I studied chemistry to change the world and make it better, safer, more efficient.

Now I realise I can’t change economic dynamics

Ru**********:

It’s happened in fashion, with “fast fashion” companies. This makes it almost impossible for new classic designs to be created, pretty much stifling haute couture.

Wa**************:
Wow, a light bulb has gone off in my head after this. super.

Mi**********:
I'm thankful that I don't seek every new item every year.

Co********:

The video quality of your videos took a quantum leap!

Great work Veritasium team!

MU****************:

>makes a bulb that lasts forever
>sell it to everyone in the world
>no one needs any bulb anymore
>leaves

Je******:
The thing I hate most about planned obsolescence is that it assumes we have endless resources. It's terrible for our planet.

go**********:

I work in building maintenance and use a lot of light bulbs and I have yet to use a LED bulb that lasted as long as advertised.

what people think of conspiracies: they want to kill us and control us

what conspiracies actually are: give me all your money

Ce*******************:
I rely on a CPAP machine to sleep properly at night.

Without it, I don't get enough oxygen, I get brain-fog, I get a shorter temper, I can't focus, I can barely enjoy anything, no matter how passive an activity. I can't exercise because my body doesn't repair itself. My joints and back get stiff, I get dehydrated, my sinuses clog, everything hurts, my head throbs, it's like waking up with a hangover every day. My anxiety goes up, I can't pick up on social cues, I get paranoid. This issue has tanked my career, numerous relationships and hobbies.

With the machine, that disappears in one good night of sleep. I feel fantastic. It's like magic. After 6 years of treatment I'm still finding little, subtle problems that can sabotage the therapy, and I'm looking into alternatives to increase the reliability.

The CPAP machine itself costs around $1500, and typically lasts about 5 years. The main accessory that impacts the quality of the therapy is the mask that delivers the air, and they generally last several years as well in my experience.

HOWEVER

Resmed is the company that makes the CPAP machine that I have, and they bundle masks with each one. Now, the mask itself costs several hundred dollars. If the whole thing fell apart, I could just buy another mask from another company. Most of the mask lasts, but I've had two from them now, and each time a small but critical part that costs less than a whole mask, but far too much, has broken within a year.

The first time it was their "easy fit" strap that supposedly stretches to fit your face with no manual adjustment required. It degrades over the months until it not longer holds the mask on your face, and your treatment quality gets worse and worse. They sell a replacement, what is essentially a fancy elastic strap, for seventy goddamn dollarydoos. You can get them off ebay for 20. Other masks have a simple elastic strap with velcro adjustment, and they don't wear out. It took me over a year to discover this problem, during which my quality of life gradually got worse and worse.

When I got my second machine, I saw they'd used a standard velcro strap just like everyone else, so I figured it would be fine. About a year later, three months ago, I started waking up with a dry mouth and blocked nose. I couldn't figure out why. All the brain fog started coming back, my projects went on hold, my house started to get messier, all the hell I'm used to. Two nights ago I finally noticed a little hole in the Resmed nose mask I use. It had opened up where the squishy silicon part attached to the hard plastic. On one side, the glue was strong, on the other it had let go like it was barely even there. I went back to an older nose mask made by another company, and today I'm feeling normal again.

The worst thing about these slowly-failing parts is that your sleep deteriorates gradually, and it's really hard to notice that it's happening, especially when you've spent most of your life pre-treatment having to tolerate a permanent hangover. It's hard to notice particularly because you have to be skeptical of your own breathing, and you can't do that whilst at the same time relaxing enough to actually fall asleep.

Resmed sabotaged my wellbeing for months and years at a time, over the course of years, so they could sell me a couple of overpriced pieces of silicone, plastic and cloth.

Ni**************:
Great video! As a carbon filament lightbulb enthusiast I'm glad you didn't hold out the centennial bulb as an example of long life in and of itself, as the limited power supply is certainly the main factor. The only flaw in this video (in my opinion) is the led bulb being held out as finally being everlasting. If anything, planned obsolescence is more at work in led bulbs than ever. Sure, the leds themselves last, but the components in the base of the bulb which supply the leds with dc power are absolutely not made to last (edit: Actually I should qualify that statement, because I don't know about all manufacturers. There could be some good ones.). You could make your own led bulb that would last far longer than those sold off the shelf.

To**********:
A white fabric that is indestructible sounds like something that would be more useful for making mediocre tents (not waterproof), dust covers, as well as car parts, armour, and all sorts of other things.

Edit: people care about colors, and durability is not important enough that people will forego all colour and patterns. Honestly I’d like to see a sequel where the invention is discovered to be wholely unsuited for the consumer market, simply because it cannot be coloured, and its complete resistence to depreciation just shows how it’s really good for making conveyer belts. The lack or tearing sounds like it’d be bulletproof too.
