Playtime Comments : [TED] How one tweet can ruin your life | Jon Ronson

Be********:

11:14 "This isn't social justice, it's a cathartic alternative ".

That's a great quote and I enjoyed this talk.

Top Comments : [TED] How one tweet can ruin your life | Jon Ronson

St*********:

The beginning of cancel culture. When i first heard this talk, i was surprised. Now, it's just an everyday occurrence. Evil disguising itself as virtue, destroying people's lives for trivial matters.

An********:
5 years later and the situation is the same, if not worst

El**************:

"We're now creating a veil in society where the smartest way to survive is to go back to being voiceless; let's not do that" so well put

Be******:

I’m writing this to apologise, 5 years ago I was part of this, although I did not tweet I did share the excitement over her getting fired and what will happen to her. And although recently I have been against how far cancel culture has gone. But the issue is the fact cancel culture became a thing. To all those affected by cancel culture, both in the past and in the future, I am sorry.

Ca*********:

2020 here, this video still ages very well

Aa**********:

If this doesn't tell people something about cancel culture...

W4*******:
anyone here in 2020 thinking about the cancel culture rn?

Re***:

Très bonne vidéo que SEB nous a conseillé

Sr********:
All these years later and still nothing good coming out of Twitter lol

It's a shitstorm machine.

Pe***********************:

You know it's a good TED video when the comments are turned on.

Li****:

I was once mildly publicly shamed for mentioning that I didn't like a particular newspaper. I was banned for 24 hours. I left twitter after that, I love my job more than my voice. Sad, but true.

Ri*************:

This video is from 3 years ago and it's so much worse today.

Dr*********:
It just hit me that history sorta does truly repeat itself. I was thinking of the Salem witch trials long ago. Someone started an accusation then everyone turned against that one person and their life was ruined immediately. The people of Salem were basically cancelling people in their own way.

It*********:
A woman's life destroyed because people didn't understand a joke. Really people? Didn't even think to ask if it was joke before you jumped on the bandwagon?

De*******:
If you want to see worse things, go on sites like Reddit where your identity is kept anonymous and you can anything without real consequences. If you don’t want your account to be known by your bad posts or comments you can just create a new account with a a fresh start.

re*************:

Alternate title: "How you can ruin someone else's life by judging what they say out of context"

Lu*******:
This is depressingly true another 5 years on.
In fact, it's so true that you can create a toxic and vitriolic flame war by sharing your opinion about a film. A freaking movie will make people insult your intelligence.

Ga*******:

this talk is more relevant now than ever

Fo******************:

Imagine using Twitter.

Me*******:

2020 and this video is still relevant...that's a bad sign

As********:

What an amazing ted talk I came across. Shaming others and being social juges have become the new trend and I'm getting sick of it.
As he said people have their smart moments and stupid moments. Let's take a moment to assimilate that and know that no one got it all.
#Let's_mind_our_own_businesses everybody :) <3

ma********:
You don't even need to be the one tweeting. Someone else can tweet something fake about you, and it can destroy a career.

Da************:
Getting a very strong Black Mirror vibe from this talk. Powerful stuff.

Jh***********:
Twitter is literally the cesspool of the internet. Every time I open Twitter my feed is filled with people being offended by stupid stuff, fighting hate with even more violent hate. Who wants to live their life just looking for stuff to criticize? Sounds like a sad state of mind to be in. I just stay away from twitter now.

Bi******:
Well the good news is that Gawker shut down like 4 months ago so the internet is fractionally better i guess.

sa************:

This video was recommended to me after watching the TED-Ed video on the Salem Witch Trials and damn if the basic principle present in both isn’t absolutely astounding.

Do***************:

Interesting how I stumble upon this 4 year old video. Nothing has changed.

Da*********:

This video needs to be required to get access to the internet

Jo************:

The solution is simple: institutions should just agree that tweets are as significant as your sharing your personal view to someone you are conversing with.

Cr******:
2015 "...Lets not do that."

2019-20 Cancel Culture.

Bigest SMH.

Et*******:
Je suis là grâce à SEB et vous?

Ja*******:

I love it when the camera panned over the audience and you can see the "oh god, I'm a monster!" expression on many people's faces.

Ga************:

One ant is stupid. A lot of ants are smart.

Humans are the opposite.

Ki******:

Everyone stuck in the whole "cancel culture" should watch this video.

Kh**************:

“A world where the smartest way to survive is to be silent.”

6 years later and it’s very true more than ever.

I once saw a video on Instagram of a child playing outside alone. She looked happy. But the people in the comments got upset about the parents for how irresponsible they were. So I wrote that in my neighborhood it is normal for children to play alone on the street or to go to the playground and that the independence of my son is important to me. The reaction was harmless compared to the story of Justine Sacco. Nevertheless it made me sad. People accused me of being a bad mother. Someone commented under all the pictures I'd posted that I didn't deserve to be a mom. I received private messages. For the person who posted the video it must have been a lot worse. But after a few such experiences, I deleted all of my social media accounts.

li***:

That's why I've learned to never EVER show what I think regarding any topic. Words are misunderstood and you might look like you're the opposite of what you really are for the expense of people that just want to feel good about themselves. To talk in social media successfully is to avoid saying anything the vast majority of twitter users disagree with. To always get behind trends so that even if you do screw up, nobody cares because everyone did. To have the opinion of everyone else. This is just making a product line of societies with the same feelings and the same thoughts so that we can be sold things in bulk as there are no different markets. We're all just one big market for companies to look at.
That's why I've learned never to have an opinion. Because voicing your opinions means to give in to this control that everyone is suffering from.
The only reason I'm commenting here is that I know that I'm safe here. Even if this comment is seen by anybody, it won't get much response. It's also too long for anyone to really read I guess.

Jo*********:
Dude the internet is fucking horrifying. I’ve legit watched lives and businesses tank so unbelievably fast. Like how a guy (black) made a joke (legit just a joke) about a woman (white) who was mad at an airport that was on his flight. And because it was misunderstood twitter and Reddit ripped her to shreds and were bombarding her job with calls and emails demanding for her to be fired because of her “actions” the man had gotten back onto his twitter to explain the joke and try and get people to stop but the damages had been done. Her life was destroyed over a bad joke and no one took the time to think “maybe this was sarcasm or just a joke” and were quick to destroy someone. It’s why I do my best to avoid sensitive subjects and barely comment on anything anymore. I want to be able to have a normal life rather than having something I say taken out of context and have it cost my career or the professional progress of a family member.
